    Hey fellas

I've had a strange thing happen to my humi...went to pick a cigar out the humi this evening and found a few cigars a bit hard and dry and didnt have the normal springy feel they normally have.
I've check the rh and it's was about 60 but under the low it didn't It did say 49 which is low but when I checked it was 59 this evening...I've got 2 x 65 boveda in there with about 40 cigars. I don't open it often only when in going to smoke something from there. Or just rotate them round

I've smoked some recently from there and they were fine...it's been the past week it's kinda lost humidity...I've added another boveda pack as the ones in there as slowly drying out. But still have life in them not dry at all. Do you think the recent heat could have caused this or maybe I've left the lid open slightly in the past week?

Is this something to worry about?

Maybe, maybe not. I assume you have a static desk-top unit of a relatively small size, no?

Okay, small desk-top units can be difficult to stablize and the slightest change (opening the lid) can have a huge impact on the humidity and stress out your 60% packs. I suggest you get your box up to 65%; 70% if your sticks turnover quickly. This will give your wee box a better chance to absorb those sudden swings in humidity (again, when opening the lid too much to take a peek at your precious cargo).

Now, how do you do this? Toss in a couple of 69% (or slightly higher) packs to allow for humidity swings within a more acceptable range. In my opinion, 60% is too low for a desk-top box.

Full Disclosure: I pulled the above information from don TJ's dusty old puro journals, so the info may be a tad dated.

    Best of luck, compadre!

In a wooden humidor you should always use Boveda packs a few % higher than the level you want to achieve as the wood absorbs moisture too

Yea I have read that when I started using it...but strangely in my humi and boveda packs I use I generally get that humidity.

Have you calibrated the hygrometer recently?

It's my digital one.. only been a 1% out....

It's really strange it's seems like it's only a few sticks that have dry.. I checked the humidity today it's at 58....will chuck my spare 69s in there for a few weeks.... Very strange

I'm now using the new 320 gram Boveda pack in my desktop humidor. Costs a bit more but lasts longer. I have a 65% one that is giving me a reading of 66% in my 80 count humidor on a calibrated hygrometer.

Didn't know they were available here now...are they quite big or same size as having 4 in the humi?

They are quite big. I believe they also sell a backing plate so the whole thing can sit on your lid, but mine is just resting on the cigars.

I can post a picture later if you want to see the size in relation to cigars and a humidor.

Right. And as long as your unit doesn't get dry, the wood walls should remain saturated, although I read somewhere (probably in don TJ's jorunals) that good cedar lining will actually aid in maintaining a stable humidity environment - sorta' like the Boveda pack.

Good idea, but in chico shamz's case, his sticks are hard and dry (Yuck!). So, calibration probably won't help. (Sad )

Smart! A good lesson for all static desk-top owners.

There's a fog upon you screen...

Chico, you're hygro would be clearer if you'd peel off the plastic screen protection. -BB
