  • Keeping a humidor in a conservatory

I had always agreed with Mrs B, that I would never smoke in the house. As summer is approaching it means I can sit out in the garden and enjoy an uninterrupted smoke. However it does mean that during the winter my cigar consumption drops dramatically.

We are thinking of having a conservatory added to our lounge, primarily as a 'den' for me. So that I can have a comfy smoking chair, my humidor and therefore somewhere to go to chill out and relax throughout the year. We're sure that we can regulate temperature throughout the year and that it would be usable throughout. (My parents had the same firm do theirs and they added an AC/Heater unit that works wonders).

I have an Adorini Bari display humidor which is virtually full. It contains all the cigars I have collected over the years. I'm wondering whether it would be too much to store it in the conservatory? An area will have obscured glass and be out of the sun, due to planning and position, so I'm confident it wouldn't be in direct sunlight all that much.

A quick google didn't tell me anything, so I thought I'd ask the question on here.

If it's out of direct sunlight & you have ac & heating that maintains a stable environment all year round then go for it.

Conservatories do get hot, so if you have AC unit installed it will come down to cost. Are you happy to cool the conservatory when you are not home just for the cigars?

I'm with smokey joe on this one. Keeping the heat down is the important issue. If I leave the internal door to my conservatory shut on a hot day a candle will melt to liquid in there. I would add that it needs to be out of direct sunlight completely as opposed to 'all that much'. I have already had to move a humidor in my cabin because spring sunlight was hiding the side of it through a window with antiglare film fitted and I actually watched the humidity falling as the side of the humidor heated up whilst I smoked a cigar.

Thanks chaps. I agree it is going to come down to good permanent shade and cooling.

Since posting, I've had confirmation of the price and it is a lot lower than I thought, so I could easily justify the AC/heater unit and a decent Chesterfield seat and stool.

I'm going to make a mark where I think the humidor would go and see what sunlight it gets. I know it won't be an exact science, but should give me a good steer as to whether it is practical or not. Mrs B runs her nail salon from the dining room where the humidor currently sits - she is keen to see it gone!
