Can I ask my retailer what year the cigars are from when I buy online

Can I ask what year cigars they have at purchase when I am buying my cigars online from my retailer so i know how long the aging will take or should I assume 6 months to a year on everything?

You can ask them anything you want, you're the customer. Whether you'll get an answer or not when buying singles is another matter completely. If the seller is taking your purchase from a box they could tell you but they may already have put them into a display or another box.

No matter the age I find that CC benefit greatly from 2-4 weeks minimum in stable conditions before smoking. After the initial rest period it can take years for any discernible difference.

Cgars used to write Box codes of singles down, but stopped being able to do this a couple of years ago, I think all their stock goes into picking trays now so the code is lost. Mysmokingshop will tell you the codes of their singles before or after buying. Don't know about any other UK retailers as I only really buy from these two.

Sorry Alex, I have to disagree with you there. Most 99% of stock coming from Cuba now is from 2016 & some from late in the year. Most retailers will be putting these straight on the shelves & you could get boxes with only 3 months age. The whilst I agree it's best to wait 2-3 wks before smoking after posting, the greener the cigar the greater the noticeable difference will be in a few months. Unless I am testing a new line to see if I want to buy & lay down a box or two, I don't smoke anything under a year old these day & mostly not under three. But when I did the difference between a 3 month cigar & a 12-15months old cigar can be remarkable. After a year the difference slows down but still noticeable between 1 3 & 5yrs. 5-10 not so much.

Sorry Simon I believe you have misunderstood my point which is probably down to the way it was worded. My point was "no matter the age" i.e. even well aged cigars will greatly benefit from a few weeks rest so don't buy vintage singles and smoke them on the day they arrive. But with that being said I can see that I didn't word my point very well, a consequence of being on the move and in a rush I guess. I'm still building my collection so most is still fairly young and I completely agree with your comments, in fact I remember saying on this forum that I try to give any new cigars at least 6-12 months rest as this is when you get the most noticeable improvement IMO.
