  • Getting a new humidor - welcoming suggestions for cigars

Well, I'm getting a 200 cigar humidor. I intend this humidor to be a pretty decent selection of cigars, ones that you would smoke on a special occasion. Any suggestions on cigars and please be realistic, I cannot afford ?200 single cigars (unfortunately) but cigars around ?30 is affordable (It doesn't have to cost that much, if you think theirs a ?10 cigar that's fantastic I am happy to buy the cheaper ones to)

    All suggestions welcome

    Cheers

The best advice I can give is not to start spending ?30 on cigars until you have access to pm's, you'll fill the humi for a lot less via box splits on here.

How does the box splits work? Is it by several people combining to buy a box/boxes and splitting the goods?

Technically that would be a group buy. A box split is where a member buys a box that he might want five of and sells the rest on.

Cool, I see now why having PM's has to be earned, as it appears extremely beneficial for joining in with bulk buys and box splits!

Exactly, its Deano's way of discouraging fly by nighters who just join up to take advantage of a deal and never contribute anything.

I've also noticed since I sold up in Jan this year and now how much cigars have gone up in price. i used to always have a slack handful of RyJ Churchills in stock. They seem to of gone from ?12-?13 a stick up to ?17 ish. Which is a big hike. So trying all sorts of avenues currently to restock at sensible money.
                I don't think I'd spend ?30 on a cigar. I don't have a sensitive enough palate to justify them.

After making assumptions from your username perhaps the monte open regatta? These are aimed at the more casual or new cigar smoker and although I was extremely critical of the entire open range when they launched I've heard good things about them more recently.

Does any fellow BOTL have recent first hand experience and can confirm what I've heard? Or otherwise.

Your right to make assumptions by my username , I am new to the whole world of cigars (well from June this year) and so far I am enjoying it. I have had a few rough cigars, but some really tasty ones to. I've got a new cabinet for Christmas (pictures will be put up in due course) and I'd like to start building a wee collection.

I'll hold off for now on the expensive (for me at least) cigars until I get PMs and I'll stick to the ?10 - ?15 range (give or take a quid)

                    Cheers

Depending on what you've enjoyed so far... Like most here I suspect, my more serious interest in cigars (rather than singles on occasions for years) developed with trying different singles... this is possibly what you've been doing already...

for me rather than just random, this was mostly by trying other vitolas in brands I'd enjoyed and other brands in vitolas (or similar) to those I'd enjoyed... and where a review sounded interesting... It becomes a really enjoyable journey...

Once I found some firm favourites I started to buy boxes/cabs of those but still continue the journey exploring some new to me smokes...

On that basis, if you are looking for recommendations, let us know some of the smokes you've enjoyed most and I'm sure that will lead to some suggestions of others to try...

Likewise, waiting for PM's to enjoy some cigars from box splits that would normally be out of my reach

I am relatively new too, I've been smoking CC for about 5 years but not always particularly frequently. The Open Regatta fall bang in the middle of that price range and might be worth a try. Which cigars have you enjoyed (or even not enjoyed) as this might help distinguish where your tastes lay to help us make better suggestions.

The Viking Nightshade Double Maduro Robusto - I have ordered these a couple of times as an every day smoke (I don't smoke every day, but you get what i mean) I like the taste of them, especially after a couple of weeks in the humidor. The only draw back is sometimes the wrap bulges/rips/comes undone.

Davidoff Winston Churchill Belicoso Cigar (the new Lancaster) - A really nice cigar, will order these again

My preference for size is robusto at the moment, I like half corona for a quickish smoke. But I am open to try anything to be honest, I enjoy trying the different smokes.

I'm afraid I know nothing about non Cubans but if you're looking at robustos the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No 2 is a fairly mild one I enjoy, Partagas D4s are really nice also but are on the stronger side. Trying one of each of those might help you get an idea where your tastes lay and are not massively expensive.
