  • Is this sculpture cigar related

    Hi Guys
Took this photo a few weeks ago
Do you think he is carrying some nice robustos
or is it some sticks of dynamite?
    Or possibly neither
Would be interested for your comments

There's your answer - his big brother in rather more comfortable surroundings at JJ Fox!

Why does the picture keep disappearing?!
Anyway, most of you will know the figure, formerly from outside the shop and now upstairs.
For strommy - 'cos I can't attach the picture (!), try this link: www.cigars.co.uk/location/jj-fox
Where did you snap the other one?

I think he has now sold them (possibly on EBay)

Judging from his other hand, it looks like he's got the same 'drink problem' as this guy...

You a chiefs fan? I come up to sandy park occasionally, Albion aren't quite in the same league (clearly and metaphorically)

I am but, like you, I only get down to SP occasionally. Went to the final last year; don't think we'll be seeing them there this year alas! Reckon Albion can take a share of the plaudits as they were responsible for 'bringing on' young Slade - and others?

My initial thought was that he is carrying a faggot or some smudge sticks. But apparently Native Americans carrying cigars is an actual cigar shop thing..... News to me.

If I was at home I'd post a photo of me standing next to Nat Sherman's indian but I'm not so you'll have to make do with this link

Cigar store Indians were used instead of signs to signal that a store sold tobacco. When and why did this happen?

That's a great link. I had no idea it was so historic as a form of signage or so widespread.

                            What a really interesting article
                            Many thanks for that
Didn't realise that these sculptures originated in the 1600s
