  • Cab vs boxes

Just saw a post regarding the habanos maybe looking to stop 50 cabs soon

A question for you more experience BOTL....just wanted to know what is the benefit of the cabs vs lid boxes and vice versa??

I never would have thought there would be any difference but I'm sure someone said they age better in cabs if so why? Or is it a placebo effect?

I think its the tobacco on tobacco effect, in dress boxes the cigars are touching paper and also tend to get a little box pressed over time.

They apparently do age better in cabs, but I have never tested this or anything (and haven't smoked cigars long enough to have been able to)

For me there is a romance with cabs - they strike me a more traditional and I also much prefer they fact the are solely wooden and don't have paper plaster all over then

Me too...I do love the wooden boxes and cabs...they just look so much better IMO.

          Hi sheppsea!

I've had the great honor to try a few of don TJ's cabinet and non-cabinet cigars during my training and I have to agree, cabinet-aged cigars just taste better than non-cabinet age cigars.

The same can be said about tubed cigars. Well-aged tubed cigars just taste better.....in my opinion.

This surprises me, I love a dress box personally.

I find dress boxes to be more practical and easier to inspect then cabs, but I definitely prefer full wooden boxes, and while this isn't exclusive to cabs, all the cabs are indeed plain paper free, which is a definite plus for me. This, on par with the increased air circulation probably makes for a better ageing process.
Last but not least, cabs supposedly have a superior cigar selection, although I'm not sure that is the case nowadays.

I guess that might be true, but I actually enjoy inspecting a bundle of cab cigars ever since don Genero* taught me the technique. I grab the ends of the bundle wrapper and carefully lift out the entire bundle intact. Can't think of a more beautiful sight!

Now, don Genero, being more experienced than I, lifts the entire bundle out of the cab by the ribbon tie. I never get tired of watching him do this!

*don Genero lives near don TJ's hacienda and has been most helpful in my journey to learn about cigars.

That's also I how do it, but even so dress boxes are quicker to take a look at, even though removing the top cigar layer isn't always an easy task.

Probably why so many NC producers put a little piece of ribbon in the line up to lift the first cigar out with

Mate and I were discussing cab vs dress box last night! Personally I like a box press but it makes sense to me that a cab should have better air circulation. Anyone ever smoked Partagas 898s from varnished vs unvarnished? Would be an interesting (and tasty) experiment : )
