Couple of Newb Questions.....

Ok guys, I have a couple of questions that are probably stoopid but if you don't ask and all that.....

I read the recent thread regarding freezing cigars to destroy pests, I can get that. Why do people have wine coolers? I appreciate the answer may be to keep wine cool......., is it because it keeps the humidity better for large volumes of cigars at lower temps? Why would lower temps be beneficial? I read a something that if a cigars draw is tight then placing it in a fridge for a short period can "free" it up and make it draw easier, is this why or is that rubbish?

Part two of my Newb Questions- Why is it considered that Cuban Cigars benefit from being in a humidifier for a period however NC are considered ready to go from the off or have I misunderstood this? Surely, and I'm perhaps over simplifying this, they both come from humid environments and are both made from tobacco leaves..........surely whats good for one is good for the other?

Apologies in advance if I'm asking questions that have been asked a 1000 times before or if these questions are beyond stupid and i should be sticking with the Hamlets that my father is so fond of!!

1 We don't generally turn the wine coolers on. They are hermetically sealed and so it is easy to store a large number of cigars at the proper humidity. For example before I set up my new one the other day the humidity in my garage was 37% and yet inside the wine cooler it was 71%.

2 Non Cubans are made from aged tobaccos and so are ready to smoke at point of sale, Cubans can be sold a lot 'fresher' and so can benefit from a period to mature. Some however smoke really well fresh.

Yep, its a good looking and solid very large tupperware box. That's why most guys buy second hand ones that don't work for a pittance on eBay

I think I read somewhere in don TJ's cigar books that no respectable NC vendor would sell cigars during the "sick period." The sick peiod is defined as 9 to 12 months after a cigar is rolled and is caused by moist wrappers applied during the making of a cigar. Thus, fermentation occurs and causes cigars to smell like cat piss.

Cuban cigars, on the otherhand, are often sold during the sick period. So smell before you light!

That's what I read in an official looking cigar book. So take it for what it's worth.

Yes, same here - wouldn't have bought it if I didn't have to turn it on, at least in the warmer months. I guess it does come down to how hot the weather is where you live. And yes, it is commonly accepted (although I don't think there is a rule, per se) that lower temps and RH are advisable for long term storage... And when I say long term I mean something over 5 years.

Thanks one and all! I have to admit I've gained quite a bit of cigar knowledge at the UKCF, thanks to you and the others folks who have been willing to "play" along with this newbie!



At this pace, very soon I will have stored enough personal power to navigate the dark sea of awarness and join don TJ and the Coros on their definitive journey.
