• Is this mold?

    Hello folks.

Today I went to Gauntley's of Nottingham, in short bought few sticks includng Private Stock Corona.

What concerns me - I noticed some dots near the cap. They don't look like they should be there, I managed to remove few, but not all as didn't want to damage the wrapper.

Tried to take some photos, but my technologically advanced phone didn't really cooperate. That's the best I could come up with.

Is it anything to worry about?

    Cheers
    Tom

Them tiny, dark dots below the cap... Will try and make photo from different angle.

Mold on cigars is green or white. It's a 'toothy' wrapper I suspect

In that case I won't bother with another pic, these specs are dark brown-ish (?). Thanks for info smokey joe

If it didn't brush off then it's a part of the tobacco leaf

For once I was wrong. As soon as I saw the title of your thread I knew it was going to be mould. I have never seen anyone with plume, asking 'is this mould?'! But you proved me wrong Tom Major, indeed, nothing to worry about. Unlike mould which certainly is.

I always read mix things about Plume...some say is doesn't exist some say it does...I really have no clue..I need to look at the science more.

Hey, I am new to it, ok? Better safe than sorry

Yeah, very welcoming indeed! Looks like I will be visiting him quite often, as this seems to be the only place to allow me to shop without being tracked by Mrs (no stains on bank statement left )

YIKES! I was warned that some of the dudes around here can be rough of newbies like us. Guess we just found one. (LOL)

I've seen "plume" on some of don TJ's older cigars. I always thought it was a sign of a rotting cigar. But according to a local aficionado (and what I've read in the archives), "plume" is actually the result of the cigar oils pluming on the surface and is generally thought to reflect a cigar that is aging well.

Sometimes it feels like the more I learn about cigars, the less I know. Go figure!

Im of the opinion that plume is rare and that most claimed cases I have seen are normally mould IMO.

The idea of plume bothers me too, why would it be a good thing to have oil crystalizing on the surface?

Surely it's just as likely to be related to swings in temperature?

But hey, my local shop has some pluming snickers bars, do you reckon I should offer him a good price to procure those prime bars?

Nah, I have to say it's yet more cigar community hocus pocus. Much like the proliferation of tasteless old sticks that get paraded as quality aged smokes.

It certainly exists but can be seen as a shimmer on the wrapper as it's due to dried crystals. It is not soft, fluffy, white, green or blue.
