  • Bringing back a cigar from the "dead"

Hey guys - wondering if any of you have experience with bringing back a cigar when it's been kept in bad conditions?

A friend of mine was given a cigar around 6 weeks ago, and had just kept it in a drawer in the ziplock bag it came in.

It's a Boli Belicoso Fino, which I've had before and enjoyed so I'm hoping that by putting it away in my humidor for 2-3 months will bring it back. Or am I wasting my time here?

Is the cigar in bad shape? In a ziplock it may have retained a little humidity so could still be smokeable

    Does it feel completely dry?

      Hopefully that's the case.

The cigar looks okay - doesn't feel too dry, hasn't cracked anywhere either.

There was however, a small spot up by the band. Not sure what this is - I've never seen this discolouration before

Probably just a water spot on the leaf, nothing to worry about.

I have successfully brought back some quite dead cigars. I put them into a little tupperware box with their own small Boveda. They were smokeable but lost some of the flavour as the oils can't be replaced once lost.

In your situation dave I'd put it in the humidor with the rest of the cigars for a few months might enjoy it more
with a bit more humidity behind it just my opinion.

6 weeks! Sure it'll be smokable, not perfect but couple of months in the humi & it should be fine. Spot nothing to worry about. 6 months in a drawer & it'll never taste the same. But there was a box of rare cigars fond in a house that was sold for thousands at auction, unfortunately we'll never get to hear how they smoked.

I was given a box of Cohiba Esplendido many years ago that had been kept in an airing cupboard. Using a couple of ziplock bags and a lot of patience I managed to get them mostly back to how they were supposed to be.

After that a long period in the humidor with everything else worked a treat. They've all been smoked now!
