The era when deals in the City of London were sealed amid a fug of late-night cigar smoke is drawing to a close. Over the past five years cigar consumption has fallen a fifth ? and plummeted 80 per cent in the past two decades. On current trends, the cigar will all but disappear from Britain by 2026.The glamour of cigars ? as epitomised by politicians and film stars, from Winston Churchill to Clint Eastwood ? has been extinguished as smoking bans, coupled with ever higher rates of duty, have taken their toll

Cigars and smoking
Interesting as there seems to be a large number of COSA's that have opened in the past couple of years and from what I see a resurgence of our beloved hobby of cigars. Can't argue re duty that's paid in the UK however we've all seen and experienced the increases but consumption remains and whilst we should support the brick and mortar shops we live in an age of alternative buying where hunting around can make a huge difference in savings. I'm sure cigar smoking as a whole has decreased but I'd guess the majority of those folks were hamlet, castella, King Edward smokers. From what I've heard Havana smoking is enjoying a boom in the UK. Otherwise Mitchell wouldn't be opening shops up willy nilly lol

Having trouble posting the link
try for the last time.
Cigars are deeply rooted in the United Kingdom, to the point where a cigar size is literally named after a former UK Prime Minister.
However the article clearly notes why individuals that enjoy Cigars are having problems in the UK.
Soaring Duty Rates
The British Government has constantly raised the taxes on Cigars to the point where they are unaffordable to many individuals. A typical box of cigars is taxed at a rate of approximately $400.00 US Dollar on top of the price of the the cigars themselves, these taxes do not include local taxes of whatever metro region the cigars are destined for within the United Kingdom and it’s our understanding that the British weigh the entire package, including the customary wooden box which premium cigars are packed in.
In essence, a average $100 box of hand made cigars would end up being $500 or more USD when all is said and done, if you want to try to take a lower cost route and buy a low cost machine made cigar brand such as Dutch Masters you’ll end up paying $450 USD or more. In essence half a month of take home pay for the average UK citizen to buy a box of hand made cigars.
We agree with the UK times, at the current rate of Cigar Tax increases there will be zero cigar smokers in the UK not because they don’t want cigars, but rather because somewhere down the line one will have to take out a third mortgage on their home to buy them.

I tried the link but it won't let me read the article without purchasing online subscription. However, although hardcore cigar smokers will continue, the vast majority of sales in pubs & hotels would have been from those who had one occasionally & those have probably withered on the vine, as they are not likely to access cigar bars with the wife & family. Consumption is also reduced by opportunities to smoke & because of smoking bans the weather. The less clement the less cigars smoked & as discussed on here, those that are will be shorter & cheaper. Our fav stores will hopefully survive & there may be an elite growth market but mass consumption will probably never return & this will hit the cigar producing countries hard.Simon Bolivar: Liberator of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru & Venezuela.

The ban on smoking in doors is only here in the UK and a few European countries, that is les then one 10th of the rest. As soon as some good will be discovered from cigar smoking, based on long, happy life examples in South America it will be all come back to wide open public here. Besides to smoke a cigar is very popular amongst 22 - 28 year old here in the UK. It is all politics lol

Looks like ill informed, poorly researched cobblers to me. Just take a look at companies house for H and F. Their turnover is remarkably consistent.Last edited by monkey66; 02-02-2016, 06:39 PM.Originally posted by Simon BolivarLittle medical correction there Steve, you will surely die...but not from smoking these
