I would recommend trying the Petit Coronas-ish sizes in the various brands - that will give you an idea of the profiles and what you like/don't like - and they won't break the bank - my personal recommendations would be:
Montecristo No. 4 (not exactly my favourite cigar but a true classic)
Por Larranaga Petit Corona
Only just seen this but I completely agree there; try and get a Por Larranaga Petit Corona with a bit of age on and you certainly won't be disappointed; one of my favourite sticks (even the young ones are decent tbh)
Being a newbie also, I haven't tried a large variety of sticks. But I've had quite a few and I'm particularly fond of the montecristo no4 and as of the weekend just gone a big fan of the cohiba Siglo II. Bought mine from a shop at just under ?19 but you can get from websites for around ?14 so a bit of a saving there. But definitely try one.
