I don't think anyone would advocate taking the wrapper on the cigar on purpose, but when you next find the wrapper start to unravel just try smoking it without the wrapper for a bit and I'm sure you will notice a big difference

You can smoke a cigar with just the binder, that will hold (or binds ) the filler together

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think wrapper leaves are seco or volado (nor ligero) - from what I have read they are a class or their own (capa)

Firstly, i dont think flavour can be easily quantified by percentage. Put 1% ghost pepper with 19% onion and 80% chicken and I bet the pepper will provide more than ita conponent part would suggest in flavour.

A maduro wrapper is fermented or soaked in additional agents which could have a vast effect on flavour. Try fresh apple juice and then try cider. Try and drink the wort of home brew then drink the fermented beer.

Heck try a peach or banana thats un-ripe and then try a ripe one. After this little experiment you should have an idea of the affect of sugar levels and fermentation on your taste buds.

In fact Matt Wall, we should look at this a different way. Your a Chemistry student, flavour is just chemicals.

Steering away from % les say 100% is a profound effect and 5% is barely any effect.

Do you think a minimal change in a chemical compound or the addition of a minute amount of a new chemical can have a profound effect on a reaction or not?

I would say for sure that it can.

The wrapper on my custom rolls doesn't hold it together, I could smoke it without a wrapper but I do find it improves the draw, it's less "rough" with it on.

Anyway, no-one actually knows, we're all just guessing let's face it; none of us have any experience of growing wrapper leaves or understanding the secret "recipes" that the Cuban's use to blend their cigars. This thread's getting boring now.

Really? I thought it was just getting interesting!

Anyway, lets just put it down to magical secrets that we can somehow quantify with exact numbers and call it a day.

Why? Because some people disagreed with you? I thought that was when it started getting interesting...

Of of course no-one will ever know the full affect of various leafs on flavour, except perhaps the blenders, but I do think there are step we can take to at least get some sort of an idea and learn more about it

I remember someone on this forum or another buying a set of cigars that were identical in everything but the wrapper. He smoked them all at the same time and concluded that he couldn't tell a difference... :-D

I think wrappers are over valued as they are the most visible part of the cigar.

But having said that, I do find maduros to have a certain sweetness I enjoy.

and I think everything comes down to numbers in the end Marc

You can quantify the whole gamut of human emotion and something as complex as the subtle sense of human taste and perception with something as basic as numeric values?

I think we can agree to disagree there.

I heard about this seminar last year. They did it in store and via Web cast for remote customers. It would have been really interesting to smoke the barber pole while the master blender was talking you through the changes he was getting / wanted to provide with the cigar.

Interesting, although I don't think that necessarily proves that wrapper doesn't make a difference, just that possibly the different types of wrapper may not have as big a impact on a cigar (i.e. they isn't much difference between the different wrappers, but they could all still have a huge affect on the cigar)

And @Matt Wall, I hate to continue an argument, but I don't consider myself to be guessing, based on my experience of smoking cigars without a wrapper (having previously smoked the same cigars with the wrapper - the wrapper just unravelled) it made a huge difference. Also - us not knowing is what makes it interesting - I think discussing the irrefutable facts would getting boring much quicker

On the contrary, that's what has made it an interesting debate.

I can't add much apart from the fact I am a maduro fan and have smoked quite a few...and they have pretty much all tasted quite a bit different to other non maduros.
One recommendation I have is Casa Magna oscuro....Very nice maduro stick...to my PALETTE anyway.
