  • Cigar App Development

So... the hard work of a sporting agent is mostly over by the start of the season (visiting new estates and clients, taking bookings etc), the next few months is mostly hand holding - and a little bit of proper work thrown in. As such, I have a bit more spare time on my hands. I have a whole host of Adobe stuff that I barely know how to use - indeed, when I think about it, it would probably have been cheaper to get a professional to make my website and brochures etc...

I have decided to think about trying to build an 'app' in my (now more bountiful) spare time. Why not a cigar app? Cigar Dojo seems to be the gold standard, however, I'm intrigued to know what things people would like to see in there if, by some miracle, I can fathom how to use the software I have at my disposal.

Over the summer I put together a little training guide for a friend to send to clients (not entirely dissimilar to VTG's excellent work), which I thought would be nice to have in there as a bit of an ebook type thing within the app. Perhaps a Vivino style rating/review page for each cigar (though without the photo recognition - I can barely design a website, integrating photo recognition would definitely be several steps to far for me).

What's good in other apps you've used, and what's missing?

It's all about communication these days. The perfect Cigar app (not that I use any) would integrate written and video reviews to allow a community to flourish. It would have a record system so users could look back at what they smoked and what they thought about it.

A stock list of their current collection and a wish list.

just off the top of my head.

What technology are you looking to use?
Although a Web developer by trade I did my first mobile app a little over a year ago in Xamarin. I'm re-doing it atm in Ionic as the licensing costs for Xamarin were high. So far Ionic has really impressed.

I didn't find any of the Apps I used to be particularly useful and in the end set up a database on my computer to record all of my cigars, its is obviously completely designed around what I want from it but includes a diary (and reviews), a stock list, and then little extra like a checklist of all CCs (according to CCW), a humidor section to see what is in each of your humidors, something that automatically works out the age of the cigars based on the box code and various other thing; these are what I would look for in an App

I have often thought it would be good to somehow develop it into an App but I suspect it will be too big a file for a phone and too ambitious for someone (like me) who knows absolutely nothing about software development, so if I do something it will need to be based on a small aspect of it or something

Good thoughts sheppsea - cigar/humidor 'management' seems to be key from reading through a couple of older threads.

I'm going to attempt it with Adobe Flash initially as the programme will make it work for iOS and Android at the same time, or so it suggests. (I could die on my arse because, whilst I have it, I have never used it before).
