I remember the first cigars I had in the US when travelling. Back home I only smoked Cubans for about half a year. I then went and bought some of my first cigars again and compared. The result was exactly what you described. Flat and boring.

However, I then went on and bought more NCs. The first one that really impressed me was a Oliva V maduro. Fantastic smoke. And amongst many other boring options I found more and more that I really liked and that gave me complexity and flavour.

On the other hand, I am giving away my 5 year old box of Punch 'punch punch',because they are tasteless and bitter at best.

Overall you probably have a better quality in a random Cuban than in a random NC. But I am sure there are many out there that you'd love as well... :-)

Niela, I'm currently putting together a basket at cgars - have a Cuban sampler and a couple of other numbers in there but I'd like to get a few NC suggestions to try out too. Your recs have been very useful so far. Anything else you can recommend for someone who's only smoked around 10 cigars (CC and NC) before?

As a person new to cigars, I would say get a few Brick House, they are mild and fantastic.

If you fancy something strong, Oliva V series is great. Don't bother O or G, they are nothing special.

And I would also recommend a Rocky Patel sampler. They are great sometimes and have good value for money. I am sure you'd find something you like in a sampler.

Another here to put in a good word for NCs. I smoke 90% NCs as just get sick of the performance issues with CCs. I?m only a couple of years into my cigar adventure, and have been a member of the forum for less than a year, so I was surprised when I joined how strong the ?Cubans are better? sentiment is.

To me the only objective part of how good a cigar is is the performance, and it seems most agree NCs have the edge there.

Everything else is surely subjective, so how can anyone make a categorical statement that ?Cubans are better??

?I prefer Cubans? or ?I don?t enjoy the flavour profiles of the NCs I?ve had? sure.

As has already been said, one isn?t better than the other, they?re just different and given the sheer number of NCs, the variety there is greater. That inevitably leads to some duds, but I would urge people not to be put off by that and to keep exploring.
