  • Temperature & Taste

Hi guys, hope all is well; just got a little question about smoking in colder temperatures.
I had an Oliva Serie V Melanio Robusto last night with my cousin and although it was nice I felt compared to similar Oliva's I've had in the past the flavours were very muted and got boring and slightly harsh towards the end of the stick. We both smoked outside in about 9 degree temperatures (for some reason September has decided to be November this year) and my cousin had the classic Oliva Serie V Belicoso which I love. I'm just wondering if anyone has had experiences where the temperature or climate has effected the taste of a cigar??

I've had a few Serie V's now and I know what they taste like, both sticks were from different but reputable retailers and both tasted... "off" is the best word to describe them. Do you guys think there's anything in temperature affecting a cigar's taste?

It'll be interesting to here your responses, cheers,
    Matt

Personally, I don't perceive 'much' difference during winter smoking and flavour. Did you by any chance notice yourselves smoking quicker, due to it being a bit cool for you? That might have impacted upon flavour. Just a thought.

I find a cigar smokes it's best for me when simulating the conditions of indoors: room temperature (or warmer) and no wind (or very low occasional wind). That's my experience. When smoking outdoors and if the temp is cold and windy, my smokes have always been wasted. Never enjoyed them...

Yes, wind is a spoiler for sure. The vast majority of my winter smoking is out back, under the porch/verandah, which I partially partition off for the smoke.

I was having a drag every 40 seconds to 70 seconds which is normal for me, and in fact I found that the wind was annoyingly slow last night, my smoke just stayed around me which I'm not used to as I only ever smoke outside, maybe it was that factor as well as the freezing temperatures that made me feel it was more muted than normal.

I guess there's also something to say about singles purchases as they don't give you any opportunity to revisit that cigar, from that box, at those storage conditions. Lots of variables. IYKWIM

                Are you related to butters?

I was wondering the same before. My best smokes have been on sunny summer afternoons, but I did have the occasional winter cigar that tasted quite nice as well. Like you I am only smoking outdoors with the odd visit to a cigar lounge every now and then. I find that smoking indoors is more pleasure and I do taste the cigar better, which I think it due to the lack of wind to be honest.

I can't see how temperatures can play a part here. The smoke shouldn't be much colder as the burning temperature is like to be the same. (speculating here)

What I think happened here is that you might have had a rather fresh cigar and it should have had more time to sit. Try smoking one you are well familiar with and that you know comes from the same box, then you can compare.

I had a wonderful Rocky Patel Decade Madure this spring, which was full of cream and sweetness. Nothing bad to be found. So I bought a box and tried 2 of them so far, both were harsh and without much flavor. The difference, the single I had was sitting in my humidor for a year. The box is now in a dark corner and I'll try my luck again next year.

Yeah it could be to do with time, I'll have to get a few in future so I can compare at different temperatures and times of ageing Cheers Niela
