  • Mould

So I brought back 3 boxes and some singles from Cuba. Checking my cooler today half the RASS and half a dozen Boli 3s have varying levels of mould appear last couple of days.

Luckily the only impact on the Lusitanias is I cracked one foot checking the box. Also fortuitously I tend to isolate my cigars across several small humis so I've isolated the affected boxes, scrapped the humidifier and have the worst offenders dry boxing. Guess I'm smoking more This next few weeks.

What a bugger. Wipe them down and hopefully it hasn't established itself too much. Over humidity at source I suspect. Any on the feet?

Only the wrapper and caps, luckily. I think you're right, it's the boxes nearest the humidifier. Everything is cleaned and isolated, the Bolis may be bloom but taking no chances, thankfully they're Tubos so a bit more protected. I check frequently so once the worst are smokes out of the dry box we will hopefully be ok. Still annoying though!

For interest sake, what is the humidity in your cooler and what humidifier are you using?

Hygro shows 69% but it is higher up in the cooler. Using a tray of silica cat litter with distilled water, have been using the same stuff for a while in the other humi without issue but the boxes affected were right next to it so I suspect they've had a bit of a higher humidity to deal with.

Believe it or not the only other time I've had mould was in a boveda humibag. Not that they aren't excellent generally.

In the summer ... Assuming you are not heating your house ... Take all the humidity sources out of your humis ... Put them back in the end of September ( or whenever heating season starts again ) .

next year ... Top up your humidifiers about the middle of May and add no humidity/water until end of sept .

this is one of the hardest lessons to get across to people ( guys just want to do something with their humis ) .

I use those Xikar Humi gel jars...

Even in Summer they stay at 65%...

                        Recommend them highly!

I would generally recommend keeping all of your Humidors/Coolers in the coolest room of the house, temperature has a massive part to play in the keeping/aging of cigars and from my journey in smoking cigars, i have learn that high temperatures have damaging effects on cigars, which I've paid the price for.

I keep all of my smokes at around 67F 62% (will naturally jump up/down depending on the season) and they smoke amazing! no mould, no more cracked feet, swelling, split wrappers and have far less burn issues! high temperature can still create mould even if your humidity is reading 65%

I'd seriously recommend moving your smokes to the coolest room in the house and use 62%-65% boveda packs they are great, give it a try you will be surprised!

                          cheers

With all due respect Derrek, your advice about taking all humidification devices out throughout the summer is very subjective I imagine, as unless any 'humi' is almost hermetically sealed, there would be a loss of RH over time surely? Having read back a bit, you're in a very fortunate position to have an RH of around 62% in your home. That's a bonus, and I expect in your particular experience, and environment, your method works
for you, but six months is a long time I think. What set up (storage) and humidification system do you have as this may put your advice into context for readers (and me)

I agree cj because when I've opened my humidor recently to check the contents, it's not long before the RH starts dropping on the hygrometer reading.
