  • tobacco laws in Scotland

I went to a local newsagent yesterday to buy a Sunday paper and noticed a Havana cigar sign on the door (much to my surprise) so I decided to ask about the stock in the shop when the guy behind the counter abruptly tells me that he is not allowed by law to show or tell me what they have in stock. Surprised by this I asked why? Again the guy snapped it's a new law, you can ask me for something and I can say yes or no but I am not allowed to tell you. So, with this in mind I asked if he had any Punch cigars. He looked at me as if he was saying to himself you're getting a punch in a minute, when I explained it's from Havana and you have a sign on your door and that's why I'm asking to see your stock his attitude changes slightly. We're not getting them in until Thursday, good I say so you'll be able to tell me what you'll have then? nope I still can't tell you, for all I know you might be from the council and have me charged and fined. I looked at him and said I work for the local bus company as you can see ( I'm in uniform). Look, I've been having a really bad day and you're not making it any better, says he all we sell at the moment are the standard cigars, okay do you have royal dutch half coronas then? Nope. okay bye good luck selling your Havanas then.
I should mention for those who don't know that all newsagents, supermarkets and small shops here have to cover tobacco product by law, which is fair enough. But I feel this is taking it to the extreme.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

I wonder if he is being super sensitive or has incorrectly interpreted the legislation. I was in my local Tobacconist in Paisley and as I entered I realised you couldn't see into the shop from the window and the previously clear glass door had film obscuring your view. Once inside all tobacco products were in plain sight and I was able to ask about and be shown a whole variety of cigars.

However my corner shop has the cigarette, tobacco and cigar display covered.

I hope you are able to go back and get a better reception in the future.

I think he was being a bit sensitive Roy, I was in my local Tesco a couple of weeks prior to this and asked to see their selectio and the girl happily lifted the covers to let me choose for myself.

A quick look at the guidance shows that you can be shown items as part of a "requested display" if you wish to purchase or are looking for information about a tobacco product or smoking related product.

Maybe he has met the "enforcers" already and has been in trouble.

He did cite that a woman in Fort William had been caught out a couple of weeks prior. Personally I think he was just being a prat. I'll just keep buying online as they will probably be overpriced anyway.

I think this is the photo you should have used PeeJay, a bit more appropriate for this forum maybe.
