As I'm new to it all I just go for something I haven't tried yet. I get very rare opportunities to have one so have to hope it's a good choice!!

In my opinion you need to try a few cigars so you get to know what you like and don't like brand wise
then you need to decide the guage and length of the cigars
no point smoking a robusto if you only got half an hour to spare
it all comes down to trial and error bit like serving an apprenticeship.

Weather, time and what my taste buds fancy, however i do believe the mood of a smoker should decide what cigar you pick.

Been loads of times I've had 3 hours free on a Saturday night without company and I want to smoke something that doesn't require my complete attention, just a good smoke I could have with a beer, like a Magnum 50 or a Monti 4. If you gave a bunch of cigar smokers 3 hours to kill, with a few good bottles of Booz.......you will definitely be seeing the high end smokes coming out but that's now always the case
