• How to sell cigars

    Hi,

I love great cigars, but I couldn't afford to buy aged sticks. So the only option is to age them myself. I am thinking about stocking up with some great sticks and keep them for 5-15 years. (well, who knows what happens in 15 years) Also, buying great cigars is still not a cheap hobby even if you age them yourself. So I wondered if I can buy lets say 2-3 boxes of a cigar I want to age. 1 - 2 boxes for myself, the other box to sell after 5-10 years. Ideally the sale would generate enough profit to pay for the other boxes so I wouldnt' have to spend much money at all.

This is all considering that I don't get weak and just smoke them all myself.

I saw there are auctions in London but I am not sure that my cigars would be worth 30k or more after a few years. So aside from high profile auctions, where could one sell an aged cigar legally in the UK? Box or singels?

    Cheers, Niels

Not on here for sure Niels, aged cigars can be bought on the Continent at no extra premium by forum members going on holiday so that would be frowned upon. You can't sell cigars on Ebay so that just leaves Scumtree.

Nah, didn't plan to sell here of course and not within the next 5 years anyway. Just wondering if this is theoretically possible. Gumtree is definately not an option for me. I wouldn't buy premium products from there myself. I did check an auction from last year though and saw that several cigars went for ?200-?800. So I guess the way via an auction would be the only way. Does anybody have any experience in selling on an auction?

I think theres lots of hoops you have to go through to sell at auction too, as PJ said, you can get decent aged cigars at not too much more than fresh ones, however the only way to make 000s is to either auction LOTS or get lucky and pick up something that disappears so you have the demand that produces high prices. If you're looking to make a few thousand every 5 years, why not just set up a direct debit for a hundred or so a month, over time that'll probably make you more money

I too have thought about this but decided against it and to make cigars a hobby rather than a business.

yeah, I am not looking for a business and I wouldn't expect ?5k for a box either. But maybe for a nice Edicion Limitade that is 10 years old you can expect maye ?600 for a box? That wouldn't make me rich but would pay for the other box I bought in addition to the one I sell maybe...

These are not a business transaction I happened across a job lot and have decided that I don't need two of each jar and will use the return for a family holiday

Yeah I was on there a few days ago, nothing seemed to be up in terms of Lots available or haven't been released yet. It'll be interesting to see what else is up. Niela, I guess I was wrong people do do it!

Yeah, that is what I thought. I was referring to another post that suggested to keep it a hobby. Basically, what you are doing is exactly what is on my mind.

I am thinking about getting two boxes of the 2014 Cohiba EL. Though they are quite expensive to start with... Though with all the hype, they shoudl be at least worth twice the original price in 5 years?

Worst case I am stuck with two cases of a really nice cigar...

Yeah I reckon British regionals would be a good shout. C.Gars guarantee they are the cheapest

I'd of thought as they're going in an auction soon that is a rather delicate and possibly inappropriate question to ask krist
