  • Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Act

For those of you who are not aware of this I thought I would give an update on the new legislation - effective from 6th April. This is my personal interpretation of the changes only.

For the past three years it has been illegal for large stores (supermarkets) to display tobacco products - we are now used to seeing cigarettes, etc, kept in cupboards, out of sight. This Law is now hitting the whole trade. Essentially it will be illegal to display a tobacco product that is for sale. Everything has to be covered up - until you request to see it. Specialist Tobacco stores have an exemption. Websites will remain unchanged.

In general life will go on as usual in a Specialist Tobacconist (with the existing restrictions). The main change is it will not be legal for any tobacco product (cigars, tobacco, cigarettes, etc) to be visible from the street.

The general public will not be exposed to any tobacco product in future - unless they make a specific effort to see it.

I am sure all tobacconists will act responsibly - so you will probably not notice too much of a change!
I'm sure there are greater things in life than a fine cigar ........... but right now I can't think what they might be.

I read this on UK cigar scene today and its terrible cigars are a work of art and to be put out of sight is terrible. Now i know its not good advertising tobacco but what child thinks smoking cigars is cool. I just think its a sad loss

Maybe it'll end at shutters on the windows and the effort is by entering a specialist shop, that would be my take on it.
