  • Partagas D4 number one selling cuban cigar in the world?

Forgive me if this has been mentioned recently but i just watched simon chase's interview with nic wing where he reveals the D4 now overtaken the monte no 4 as the number one selling cuban cigar worldwide. This if correct is quite something as the must be many impulse buys at airports as gifts etc as well as well informed consumers

I call bullshit. Habanos dont publish there data on sales % of marca never mind vitola. Maybe what he meant to say was the UK cause that information he would have access to.

good point, because i assume some machine made cigars have a large share of cuban sales just on price point alone

          t

I am only aware of the stats being released once.
Sales and Revenue figures are generally a close-kept secret within Habanos SA. In a surprising lapse, the following figures for 2006 were "published".

Reportedly just seven of the 27 current export brands account for 83 percent of all cigars sold and contribute 82 percent of all sales revenue. These brands are:
Montecristo: 23% of all cigars sold; 29% of all revenue.
Romeo y Julieta: 15% of all cigars sold; 12% of all revenue.
Partagas: 12% of all cigars sold; 12% of all revenue.
Cohiba: 11% of all cigars sold; 20% of all revenue.
Jose L. Piedra: 11% of all cigars sold; 2% of all revenue.
Quintero: 5% of all cigars sold; 2% of all revenue.
Hoyo de Monterrey: 4% of all cigars sold; 5% of all revenue.

Figures for other well-known brands are:
          H. Upmann: 2.4% of all cigars sold, 2.1% of all revenue.
Trinidad: 1.5% of all cigars sold, 2.5% of all revenue.

The Bolivar, Punch and Ramon Allones brands barely register, however this position may well have changed with the introduction of the Regional Edition Series, as these three brands alone have had in excess of 60 releases to date (2013).

The largest selling cigar is the Montecristo No.4 (a Petit Corona) with a 8% market share.

Early 2009 figures reveal the following market order:
          Montecristo.
          Romeo y Julieta.
          Jose L. Piedra.
          Cohiba.
          Partag?s.
          Hoyo de Monterrey.
          Quintero.
          H. Upmann.

You get a lot of this, people can say anything they want to try and make news articles interesting or fit there needs as there is no official figures released to contradict it. I would take most of them with a pinch of salt.

You may be right but having personally met Simon Chase on many occasions I do not believe he has any reason to BS. I did not read that this was a mechanism to try to enhance a 'news article', of course just MHO. What I would suspect is he is sharing unofficial information (probably from H and F at a guess rather than globally).

Nic, could you ask Simon to clarify which market he was referring to?

I certainly would not take Simon Chase's comments 'with a pinch of salt'. He is one of the worlds foremost authorities on Cuban Cigars in the last 35 years.

I seem to remember reading not too long ago that the PSD4 was the best selling cigar in france. Can't recall the source but it seems to have stuck in my head.
