  • How long?

I had an interesting chat with Marc aka VTG the other day and suggested he should bring it to forum but he hasn't so apologies if I'm stealing your idea buddy but how long do you plan to smoke cigars? Marc raised it because of health concerns and several guys on here; Deano, Wolfie, MarkLondon have suffered lingering chest infections this winter so it's a valid topic. I'm going to jinx myself here and state that I haven't had a cold since I started to smoke cigars but if MLW asked me to stop then I would because I love her. Otherwise I shall smoke them as long as I enjoy it and can still afford to. I have my teeth checked every six months so I would hope my dentist would notice if I have any adverse oral reaction.

8 inches, no wait what was the question? About an hour and half depending on stick size and including faffing around getting a drink sorted etc but if I spot just a free hour on the clock I will usually go for it. Hope that helps PeeJay?

Funnily enough I've just picked my daughter up from nursery...She had a lolly, (stay with me) once she finished the lolly she held the stick like a cigarette/cigar and told me she was smoking (she is 4 and a half). I've never smoked cigarettes and no one else in my family does either, so when I saw this I thought she must be copying me. She doesn't see me smoke cigars but know I have them.
It made me feel pretty shitty and for the first time I thought about giving up.

In that instant I wished I had no cigars in the house at all.

Anyway that is me being totally honest and telling you what I've felt in the last 45 mins.

Before 2020 and before I'm 70 is the plan, though to be honest the before may come a little sooner, running up stairs and things like that aren't as easy as they used to be, and in the last year or so I've found myself not wanting to face my larger smokes, not that I was ever really a 'big cigars' smoker, but I wasn't daunted by them.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I do not plan on giving up as long as I enjoy them and have friends to enjoy them with. Everything in moderation i say (but do not practice )

Good question , in the end we all know smoking and tobacco can be a killer in all its forms , I look at life in general as ying and yang , you have to have balance I eat very healthily and excersise a lot plenty of fresh air etc.... Thus enabling me imo to enjoy the naughty side of life cigars and fine spirits I don't go out drinking anymore really the odd couple of pints a month .
It's funny that most of the enjoyable pleasures in life are " bad for you" I've always loved to indulge and have many very happy memories of such evenings I certainly don't have many when I look back and say what a great evening we all had sitting round the table sharing a pot of tea.
I've also lost a few friends over the last ten years to cancer who never drank or smoked .
So in answer I'd rather live a life worth living with the pasttimes I enjoy than live a life without my personal vices and trying to put of the inevitable , we all die a little more every day we can't put it off ........

I'm really in the middle of a decision of wether to continue infrequently or just stop totally. When I look at my kids I have doubts and that tells me something.

Mark, I feel your pain bud..... That would have crushed me.

I have up cigarettes at the end of October and haven't considered giving up cigars. I see non-inhalation as a positive way to enjoy tobacco, which I like. Mind you, I did look at my cooler last night and questioned getting through them Then thought of my humis

I'm kind the same Marc, I don't smoke many, but tonight after seeing that I just wish I had no cigars in the house.
If I carry on I will make sure she never sees me adding to my humi or sorting my cigars out etc.
I shield her but she has seen them. It has made me think.

Not long after I joined the forum, there was a discussion about what you tell your children. I plan not to tell my daughter until she's old enough to understand - I don't mind when that is. We've had a couple of awful (and embarrassing) moments when she's pretended to smoke, presumably as a result of seeing my in-laws smoke.

I see a fundamental difference between cigarette and cigar smoking, not least in the health risks, but also in the purpose and enjoyment. The risks are relatively slight, even if you smoke one or two a day, and incomparable to cigarette smoking if you don't inhale. Most (all?) of us aren't addicted in a 'must smoke' way. Most (all?) of us enjoy a past time with immense variety of taste and experience. However, I can't explain that to my 4 year old, so it's best avoided.

I haven't even thought about how long I will collect and smoke cigars for. I've always assumed it will be forever, but, as PeeJay says, if MLW asked me to stop, I would, though at the moment she's almost egging me along!

I recognize all the sentiments here.

All I can say is when I quit I will quit ...just don't know when.

One thing Mark, you can't shield them from life, but you can educate them to make decisions. I remember as a kid we had cigarette toys and sweets, the majority of people who grew up in the 80's are non smokers.

My granddaughter's mother smokes like a chimney and leaves a mound of butts in her garden ashtray and she also knows I smoke cigars, they're in a glass cabinet on clear view and she has never pretended to smoke. It's just something kids play at or not. Will you give up drinking when she thrusts a cup in your hand and says 'You look like you need a drink daddy'?

I recently caught up with an ex college lecturer of mine. I first knew him in the late 90's and knew that he'd undergone major cancer surgery previously. Had large part of his tongue removed and had a scar right up his chest after surgery. He had been a chef in Bermuda and in his own words smoked King Ted cigars like cigarettes while he was out there for a few years. Was a bit of an eye opener for me really as I don't think he'd smoked previously.

Ive got a good mate who is a bit of a binge drinker at the weekend, a big whisky fan. His Doc told him recently that his liver had hot about 10 years left (hes 42,) his reaction is 'well I figure if I cut my drinking by half I can get 20 years out of it'.. That was a while ago and his habits haven't changed..
