Why do cigar packages get destroyed when ordering from outside the UK?

A couple of questions... at what point would the duties/tax be imposed? how much is this tax? when would a cigar package be destroyed? is there a law being broken here, by ordering cigars from outside the UK? Has anyone had their cigar packages destroyed?

Apologies at my lack of knowledge around this... it's all quite new to me.

There is no law being broken if you pay the duty when requested by the HRMC. Duty will be about ?260 per kilo and they weigh the whole package not the contents. They reserve the option to seize the package and destroy it without giving you the option to pay duty.

Duty needs to be paid on all tobacco brought into the UK, if they stop your package and you refuse to pay the duty you don't get the goods.

You can't be discussing ordering from outside the UK on this forum tho as its against the forum rules.

No HMRC don't have the option to just destroy. If there declaration is not filled in honestly or the value is under stated they can then seize and destroy. Yip 260 a kilo + vat which they can charge at the price the product sells in the UK.

You can go abroad yourself to any UE country and bring almost as much as you want with you back to UK.

This thread has run it's course. yngcigarsmoker I'd prefer not to see any more questions relating to this sort of thing, i.e. grey market purchasing. There's a thread on tax payment that should cover anything related to purchasing from a non-UK source. Destroying packages etc won't occur if you do this.
