I've only every once chased a box with an identical code: a 2008 box of Reyes. The first box I had was outstanding so I tracked a second with the same code... What a disappointment. Insipid dull, yellow wrapper, no aroma, no flavour.... Pile of shite.

Remember: any box you buy is ultimately graded on wrapper color. In any given box, you can have 25 sticks rolled by 25 different rollers on 25 different days but the guy who packs the box does so based on the colour alone..... Food for thought

I do think the year code is very useful but I ignore the factory codes as they change constantly anyway (or so I'm told)

''Why do some cigar smokers become obsessed with box dates and codes i myself don't worry.
No guarantee the tobacconist is going to have more boxes with same codes maybe same year
No 2 boxes are going to smoke the same of what i've heard and read just enjoy the hobby without the stress of finding codes and dates
all depends what the supplier sends you.''

The thing is, I am not angry, upset, sad or anything like that. I personally like someone who has a strong opinion. It creates diversity and ultimately a 6 page thread with an absolute wealth of knowledge within it. These threads are good for the heart and soul. Some people get frustrated, but that is life.

If you cut through to the chase, you are right, to a certain extent.

      Cheers bud

That was just an example ross if and when i should buy a box of cigars if i like the cigars i buy the box
same again when i should need another. But if push came to shove year would be my choice rather than box code.

Outstanding information and help there Stevieboy. Can not thank and compliment you enough for that wisdom. Really put what was getting to the point of being confusing information in to perspective.

It makes sense based on what I have read on here about the shades of color in a new box being organised dark to light or light to dark depending on how you look at it.
Only after reading your post did I think back to comments I had made myself about cigars sitting next to each other in the same box tasting totally different.

HMO or whatever the preface that means I am going to come out with something really opinionated but don't bite my head of for it = Date code worth checking, Factory code not worth even reading post whenever it was mechanical means of checking/testing cigars was introduced. Not in regards to flavour of cigar. Its just like trainspotters writing down train numbers. They love it but doesn't make riding the train any better. Its almost something apart from the actual flavour part of enjoying the cigar but still apart of the hobby.

              .
That's the disappointing reality of Cuban cigars. This has happened to me many times in the past and it took a while to realise that I'd maybe written off some cigars too hastily because I'd smoked the duff few that each box inevitably holds. I'm now a VR and Sancho Panza fan after trying them again......

Personally I think life's to short to worry about something that is difficult to decipher as the codes change all the time and will at best increase you chances of getting a good cigar

I'm sure someone on here also said that the code reflects that the cigars were boxed in a certain factory (not necessarily rolled), but I may well have misunderstood that.

Although saying all that, I do enjoy keeping a record of the box code of the cigars I smoked
That is a very good way of looking at it. For me I buy cigars hoping they will be good, if they're not great I'm unlikely to get another box even from a different code and year as there are so many other cigars that are bound to please. I like the "idea" of ageing cigars myself but in reality my first attempt went to shit when I was strapped for cash so aged cigars for me come from box splits and lucky find on lists.

a master case is generally ( but not always ) 1000 cigars . .. 40 dress boxes or 20 cabs or whatever ... Unless the presentation won't allow 40 boxes to fit into the ( larger) box ... Then it will be fewer .
