Why do some cigar smokers become obsessed with box dates and codes i myself don't worry.
No guarantee the tobacconist is going to have more boxes with same codes maybe same year
No 2 boxes are going to smoke the same of what i've heard and read just enjoy the hobby without the stress of finding codes and dates
all depends what the supplier sends you.

I don't really care about the factory code but it is nice to know how old they are.

Some houses roll better than others, with certain brands, don't they (i.e, Cohiba)

Probably, but correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't production get moved around the factories?

I don't get tied up in it either.... Though I'm glad I knew the date of a certain Dip 3 I smoked.

There are some people who say that there is a good batch of cigars coming from a certain box code and go out and find it, but I'm personally sceptical. The other thing to consider is how many people have enough time and funds to smoke multiple boxes of multiple codes to be able to safely say this code is better than that - there are even sometime suggestions that certain dates of certain codes are preferable. Personally I think life's to short to worry about something that is difficult to decipher as the codes change all the time and will at best increase you chances of getting a good cigar

I'm sure someone on here also said that the code reflects that the cigars were boxed in a certain factory (not necessarily rolled), but I may well have misunderstood that.

Although saying all that, I do enjoy keeping a record of the box code of the cigars I smoked

Without the so-called "box date" you're just blowin' smoke...is it too young or does it actually blow? Can't tell without the date.

                errr, I mean, DATE!"

Without the code cracking accomplished at Bletchely, we would still be speaking English as ze Germans would of given up trying to teach us it, but we would probably be part of the Third Reich right about now, the funk soul brother.......

Good point Tony. For my spreadsheet, I take the box code, but for the year. I have enough in my life with work, being a father, being a train wreck to worry about getting the box code TEB in 2007 for June & July

Ever had a really god bottle of claret you have brought at the supermarket? Some great vino sold there these days. You make a note of the area, eg St Emillion, the house & the vintage. You go back next year, you there will be plenty of St Emiliion but I bet you can't find the same house & of course not the same year. So in short box codes might be interesting on certain expensive boxes but I just record the dates in my diary. It's a guide nothing else.

I love cigars. I would say I am obsessed about cigars. I also love that I am obsessed with cigars.

I think tracking down a specific factory and month is, like some of the (pseudo) science, taking it too far for my liking.
If however doing that is what gets your rocks off then rock on!

Bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack when it comes to tracking down boxes with certain codes
a lot easier in my opinion asking for a box of cigars from such a year.
