I think FAKE cigars are faked to sell in volume not as one offs in an Auction. But, there will always be fakes, and in that circumstance you have to rely on Mitch and his people trying to weed out any that are presented. Provenance if it exists helps, though I doubt from paperwork I could provide authenticity on any of my boxes because I haven't kept any. So that leaves Mitch with sight, smell and touch plus years of experience and instinct by which to make a judgement .... tasting would be a good decider, but road testing boxes isn't in his or anyone's remit. So, Mitch doesn't Guarantee anything, can't say I really blame him, they're older, probably unreliable to smoke cigars not blooming Picasso's.

I wouldn't say there's any love lost between Mitch and myself, but I think what Google's thrown up this morning is just unsubstantiated accusation and a totally wrong way to go about things even if true. Personally, I would have no lack of confidence in bidding at the CGars Auction, but like a car auction or general auction nothing's 100%, you make your judgement and then decide how far you want to back it.

No need to apologise! It all makes sence now! It's a delicate subject and I just want to make sure I don't upset or accuse anybody of anything untowards! I had a good read of the website mentioned earlier (which your original post refers to) and yes there are some pretty serious allegations in there! To anyone who bids in these auctions, just have your wits about you and yes it is a gamble. It's up to you and only you to decide if it's worth the gamble, just try to avoid any misguided pre-conceptions on limited (possibly biased) information and use your own head!

The cgar auction is no diffrent from any other. The lots are put in by other people, the auction house does not guarantee the authenticity that's why as a buyer it's up to you to do your own due diligence

Do not forget the amount of high-end fakes that have been discussed / exposed over the years. Dunhill's, Davidoffs, Grand Reservas etc. Does this mean all auction cigars are fakes, of course not. Does this mean there are plenty of fakes in circulation, of course.

NB - I happen have an empty box of 2003 (OR) Siglo VI's. If I re-fill that box with sticks from a 2010 box (perhaps artificially age them by letting them dry a bit, exposing them to sunlight, exposing them to a musty sponge so the smell a bit 'vintage') and mis-represent them I can probably double my money. For sure some people will be tempted by such low-life fraud.

Saying all of this many a good box has been purchased at auction.

I agree but I'm a mere peasant perhaps if I were part of the ten per cent of the population that controls us peasants I'd buy a box , after all I'm damn sure there is a proportion of the population that the funds we all spend on cigars would make a huge difference to their lives . It's all relative really
