  • Spanish Cedar Wood Lining & Glue

    Good Evening Fellow BOTL

Am looking for an updated source of Spanish Cedar Wood lining and is there a recommended glue that has minimal odour and taint on the wood? Will need glueing the Spanish Cedar to plastic.

Any and all links and advice would be really appreciated. Am sure Mr. Tippexx had a link to the wood but searched and can not find it.

    Most appreciated all

    Cheers,

    Ross.Co

Ok it was easier to find than I thought. I have not checked this but a carpenter who promised to do a commission for me "when he gets time" recommended it.

Relating to glue you want Titebond 2, for two reasons.... 1. It's rated for indirect food use and is used for chopping boards etc.
            2. Titebond make some of the best wood glue going.

Out of interest, why will you be sticking it to plastic though?

Oh and Ed's link is a good one for the wood.

P.S. Brazilian Cedar is an inferior product, though allegedly still useable.

So called "Spanish Cedar" is not a true Cedar in all senses, it's much closer to Mahogany.

I've been in touch with them as they're just up the road from me, but they don't do it any more....

This might help - from the guy at exotic hardwoods:

Me: I'd be looking for shelves ofLength - 371mm
                  Width - 294mm
Thickness - 5mm (possibly 6? I'm replacing metal shelves, which are 5, but the gap is approximately 10mm).

Him: This may be possible but the width may be difficult to do in one piece.

I can supply re sawn from thicker boards and with a drumsanded finish. Cedar will be significantly less strong than metal and I would recommend using it as thick as possible in this context. Pricing for 6mm I would expect to be about ?12.70 per shelf. Pricing for the 10mm would be about ?16.00 per shelf. You have not said how many shelves you need. One shelf would not be economic to produce, ten shelves would be a sensible production.

These prices are plus carrier plus vat.

Sounds like the guys who want it need to do a cedar split

The only challenge with that would be that I'm guessing we all need different sizes?

Its got to be a better bet to do a group buy of laminate from the States on Ebay and make the shelves out of pine or lauan then laminate it surely? I've just bought a plain pine tray from Ebay that I'm going to line with cedar inserts for holding singles should I need to.

I thought the main point of using cedar was due to its absorption rate for humidity?
                          How does pine compare?
Would it make a significant difference?

Some of the big humidors have MDF shelves lined with cedar and the desktops are only lined too
