I wouldn't write off Cohiba after one smoke (especially if you're not the one who smoked it), after the first few I tried I couldn't see what the premium was for, but I'm really beginning to appreciate them now, I'm not sure if its because was was unlucky and then lucky or if my palate developed (I suspect the later) but I would suggest sticking with it

I have said this before but as we are covering old ground (for those who have been on here a while), I don't believe most CC smokers smoke that many Cohibas. Not many would have them in their everyday rotation. But as a birthday, anniversary, red letter day smoke a carefully aged Cohiba takes some beating. When you look at the price of regular Cohibas compared with the prices or some EL/RE's there really isn't much difference. I you try a few Cohibas of each of the vitolas, with at least 3-5yrs on them, you should know if they suit you or not. Cohibas, make up about 10% of my stock & I only smoke a handful a year but I wouldn't be without them. It would be like a prime colour missing from my aritsts palate. Don't be guilty of reverse snobbery

I'm pretty much convinced that if someone has paid ?30+ for a cigar, they will rave about it. I've had several cohibas, from a 66 and pyramide to a robusto and sigle V and VI. I've never particularly enjoyed them. I would take a BRC or RASS any day of the week over a Cohiba 2 or 3 times the price.

hard to say, mate. For Cubans, that generally holds true (as long as you're not buying B&M prices)

For Non-Cubans... Well... Just look at Gurkha His Royal Majesty. And maybe those Diamond Crown Maximus cigars...

We pay what we are prepared to pay. A brand wouldn't last long if it never did repeat business, so there must be plenty of people that like Cohibas just fine at the price they're sold at. Not everyone is motivated by price but if they were all distinctly average smokes, the people that smoke them would surely go elsewhere as there are plenty of alternatives to choose from. I've liked most of the Cohibas I've tried but for what they cost I wouldn't smoke them regularly.

"Fourth attempt at uploading! Cohiba Robusto from NOV 11 box My favourite stick. Great construction although slightly overfilled at the foot which meant a slightly tight draw. Good even burn requiring only a minor touch up. Typical Cohiba flavours, with a bit of honey and spicy bean notes. However these are evidently still much too young. Into the first third it developed an unpleasant metallic/stale ammonia type note, hard to describe really but it did spoil it a little. Will (try to) leave for another 12 months and hopefully they will be a little more settled. Stunning smoke when they're on. I've seen another thread moaning about Cohiba. It's my favourite brand but I fully agree, you shouldn't have to wait 3-5 years to be able to enjoy a product costing this much!" TomtheBuilder


Just copied this across from the 19th Sept thread, as I didn't want to extend a dead thread any further Just a thought, if you had just paid ?30 for a decent bottle of claret from 2012, would you expect to drink it ths weekend? Of course you could & you might enjoy it but the chances are you'd enjoy it more if you kept it for another 3-5yrs, when it had developed in the bottle to a more rounded & balanced wine all together. The wine makers know this & often put on the labels or wine merchants/ supermarkets put it on their notes. So Cohibas have been made since the 60's, the blenders know who long they are going to take to be at their peak but Cuba can't afford to keep them that long & these days neither can our suppliers. So you have a choice. You can smoke them straight a way, or 6-12monhs later or 3-5yrs later. I know which I prefer & once you have a decent stock, waiting isn't so hard.
Here's a photo taken in 2011 of cigars I have aged myself ie not part of the recent collection buys) & I still have some of these left. Yes I know the old label smokes need smoking up now but I am working on it, gonna take a couple on hols with me this leave Cohibas.2011. 01.27.083.jpg

I think you do pay a slightly higher price for the name, with Cohiba. Whether they're worth it or not is personal preference. You pay a premium for branding, just like anything else. It's like shopping for clothes, clothes will fit, some better than others, not always the more expensive feel more comfortable. Or like BMW, expensive name, yet I know people who have had nothing but bad luck with them.
