Ten years in cardboard vs ten years in boxes

doesn't exactly promote mould. just like how tubos "promote" mould.

keep it in your humidor and it rarely gets mouldy. only when you buy them are they dotted with that white annoying mould you have to brush off. makes you wonder why

Cardboard in a humid environment gives off its own aroma so aging in cardboard packs can taint the cigars with a papery/cardboard taste. If aging cigars from cardboard packs i would remove them from the packs and sort them into a bundle. If your looking to buy some with 10 years of age on them I would personally steer clear of the packs, stick with boxes/cabs from stuff this old.

myth ... cigars aged in paper 5packs begin to taste like cardboard .

i have '02 monty#4's in cardboard 5packs (i have had them since '02) ... they are smoking fine .

dress boxes are paper also and they do not become papery/cardboardy either .

if you have the option of putting them into an empty wood cabinet ... you could ... otherwise i would leave them as they came .

Correct, its cedar lined with glue and then the artwork/paper stuck over...

I think the common wisdom is to remove from cardboard for long term ageing. It is also true that one can smoke 10 year plus cardboard stored without a big problem.

If they are stored in a perfect to temp /humidity environment then probably Ok. For must of us there is significant fluctuations over 10 years and this is where I find cardboard (and to a lesser extent dress boxes) take on and hold excessive moisture. This can cause unwanted smells and encourage mould.

Cabs are the best of the lot for me, paper and cardboard are not ideal materials in a long-term high humidity environment.

As a side note I recently gave up storing my la escepions in their dress box. I noted a high humidity level in the two LCDHs I visited in Italy. This box has a high paper content and every 6 months mould returns. I now have the cigars in a zip lock for ageing and the box aside.

So basically if you find a good deal and they're in card boxes go for it but given the choice get cabs. I think most BOTL's would take a cab over a card box given the choice anyway but me? I'd be cool with card if the price was good. Honestly I think if anything I'd like to age some stix with no card or wood involvement, I guess that is why I'm so keep to get a jar at some point. Most jars seem to have cedar inserts too. Don't get me wrong I love the cedar as much as oak on my wine but I'm INTERESTED to try an unadulterated aged Puro. So the question is this: what jar has no wood insert and also contains cigars worthy of age. Anyone care to enlighten me?
