  • First Cigar Moment

I'm going to say I had mine today.

The cigars I bought 12 years ago were when I lived alone, from an on-line retailer and then eventually stuffed in the attic. When I recently decided I wanted to rediscover them, it was on my own and I smoked a couple alone. Yet I'm thinking that what I've embarked on is actually a social activity: like-minded people sharing their opinions, thoughts and recommendations, then setting the world to rights through clouds of aromatic smoke.

So, today was the first time I went to a tobacconist, chatted a bit about cigars (oh, my vast knowledge kept them enthralled for hours ) and bought a couple. I'd kind of imagined my first 'social' moment would be in one of the big stores in London or a herf or other cigar venue: it turned out to be The Pipe Shop in Bournemouth. I guess not a lot to choose from in the great scheme of things, but enough to confuse me and I let myself be steered to what I already knew, but it was great to talk to someone who enjoys what I enjoy, thinks like I think, and so on. Then a woman in the shop said 'have you really just spent ?29 on 2 cigars?' I replied 'yes, if that's what they cost' and eventually the shop owners and me were explaining the virtues of fine cigars, the care with which they're made, the enjoyment of a bit of time taken out of a busy life, and she scuttled off with some e-contraption and bottle of nicotine. Somehow, this experience feels more significant than actually smoking the cigars - though I'm looking forward to that!

I'm interested to hear other 'first moments' - it may be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd ... cigar you smoked, the first meet up, whatever, but it definitely has to be the first time you thought 'yeah, this is good. I like this. This is me.'

Great story! Mine was the first time I went into a cigar shop, an airport tabac to be precise. I think it was Turkey and I was surrounded by boxes of beautiful hand made cylinders of brown leaf... I had seen pictures of men smoking them and had smelled the smoke from the old guys in the bar of my local... yeah, at that moment I knew... when I had enough money, I was going to smoke some.

I genuinely can't remember my first cigar and I've tended to dip in and out over the years since I was 18, picking up the odd tubo here or there or (pre-ban) buying in a restaurant after a nice meal.

The one that really hooked me badly was the Short Churchill I bought from HH - I'd smoked many cigars before but that was the first that I was able to pick up such distinct flavours from.

My first cigar moment was back in 1998 with a cigar from a local off license. End of uni exams smoked with lots of vodka on the dude.
The one that got me back in to it was a Phillies Titan maduro back in about 2005. After this it just kept going!

Nice story! You've gotten me thinking though and I can't honestly remember the moment I said yeah this is for me.

My first time trying one was after one of my parents dinner parties, my dad would have a cigar and I tried them occasionally and did enjoy them but never really paid them much heed.

Over the years I bought the odd single for New Year's Eve but the first time I intentionally bought some to smoke and not for an occasion was when I was in Barcelona and picked up a 10 box of RyJ No 2's. After that i started to buy a few more and after a trip to Peru where I brought home 25 Quintero nacionales I then purchased my first humidor and wen from there. So I guess at some point between the singles and Barcelona.

Mine was an unknown cigar a friend and i bought one each from an off licence when we were 14, if i remember correctly it cost us ?20 each and we then spent the next couple of hours sitting in the park chuffing away on them whilst getting weird looks from passers by, I'm pretty sure we bit the end off as well!.

Had a couple more after that, again unknown stuff, then didn't touch another one until i was in my 20's. Became a very casual smoker through my mid to late 20's, christmas, weddings, bbq's etc, but still not paying attention to brands. It wasn't until the end of last year (after turning 30) that I really got obsessive on them.

My first proper cigar moment was back in June this year at my friends wedding in Italy. Sat up in the hills above Sorrento overlooking the bay of Naples and Capri, Siglo 2 in hand with a glass of red surrounded by mates. I loved every minute of it!

I've honestly enjoyed pretty much every cigar I've smoked, but the first real stand out "moment" was a Monte No.5 enjoyed on the terrace @ Lewinnick Lodge, Newquay. It was surprisingly quiet for a sunny day and everything just came together perfectly.
