    So.

Recently, I went to visit a local bar of mine. A place called Jack Astor's (on their signs, they black out the t-o-r-' on purpose. entertaining bunch, i'll give them that), an extremely popular bar with palatable food and 'picky' hiring procedures, a had recently ordered my regular double of Tanquerey 10 with the server that has already known me for some time. She knew i was going to smoke and i knew as well, very nice woman and has found us intriguing for that reason. I took out my Sir Winston for a nice hour and a half on the 3rd floor patio whilst looking at the musical performance down on Dundas Square
[Aside: Dundas Square is essentially a giant triangle in the heart of downtown Toronto. Right beside the Eaton Centre which is Canada's biggest mall. It's shaped like Times Square but 5 times smaller. It frequently has little local bands that enjoys their limelight there - kinda like Times Square. Just so happens that my university is a 3 minute walk from both the Eaton Centre and Dundas Square]
Now what happened next surprised me but did not shock me. I was told by the assistant manager (decently) that i was not allowed to light up there - cigarettes only. I've heard of these stories from a lot of my mates before. But this is the only time that's happened to me; and i was absolutely flabbergasted! Speechless, what could i do but comply?

Naturally, the most i could do was really write them an angry letter demonising their practices. I asked why i couldn't just take a corner table. I complained about people sitting in the smoking section when they didn't want to breath smoke. I complained that people actually like the smells of cigars - as opposed to cigarettes (generally). As i write this, a co-worker just returned from her smoke break and man is that odour on her clothes unattractive! Knowing my moral objections would fall on deaf ears, i went financial.

Essentially, i outlined the fact that i know groups of people who differentiate between Jack Astor's and Milestones (another bar RIGHT beside them. essentially the same patio, too) only due to their cigar patios. There now remains no distinction between Jack Astor's and Milestones besides the waitress that i've known. But other than that, what's really attracting the local Toronto Cigar Gents anymore?

Please tell me how i am to smoke in a place that has banned cigar lounges AND continuously bans cigar patios...

Oh, yeah. Before i forget: smoking on patios (un-irregardless of what kind) is fineable up to $350. But it's only a rounds officer so you have the right to refuse ID. Technically un-finable in that case.

Anyways, that's my little 'sophisticated' rant. Just wanted to share this here... May not flow as well as my thoughts are always everywhere. But then you get the whole experience.

I remember being on holiday, sitting there smoking a nice cigar after dinner soaking in the entertainment and my mrs letting me know that the table next to us were all moving over and away from myself and commenting on the cigar smoke, I'd sat here (and on the edge of the area) as everyone was smoking and mainly Malboro Red as well.

I just laughed and carried on, think I met 2 or 3 other cigar smokers that holiday, we did our best to smoke the nasty cigarette smell out of the resort.

          +1 on both counts.

I've learned, even in my few years and it seems to be world wide, people just like to be insulted.

It's happening worldwide. A couple of Dublin restaurants have banned cigar smoking in their outside areas. I'm in Spain at the moment, even at a bullfight here, one of the best places in the world for a cigar, I get disapproving looks. I usually get tickets for the quieter, cheaper, sunny side of the arena, yet still..

very nice info there, Andy... why is a bullfight the best place for cigars, specifically?

but perhaps the looks come from you just being an Irishman in Spain

I only said 'one of the best places' I can think of a couple better, anyway it's only my opinion. It's a very difficult thing to describe to someone who hasn't been to one without opening up a discussion about bullfighting, which I don't want to do. I can understand why most people have an issue with it.
All I can say is there is nothing in the world like it. Of course that doesn't necessarily make it a good thing.

my mistake. fingers work faster than memory sometimes. it is, however, what i meant.

But that is very fair... Perhaps i'll give it a go in the not-so-distant-but-still-very-far-away future.

I don't know why, but I'm imagining a rather dodgy Hemingway style novella knock off with a title like that...
