    Is it really necessary?

I've tried it, it hurts, I'm getting nothing from it.

I find you can pick out many more flavours, but its not to everyones liking, if you dont like it dont do it.

It is pretty much essential for experiencing many of the flavours of a good cigar.

To my mind the same contribution as nosing whiskey / wine etc.

If the cigar is shit then it is just shit in the nose of course.

Followed the videos and don't think it's a technique issue, possibly just not for me at this stage.

I do pick up more flavours from it, but for me its taking a lot of getting used to!

The most important thing is to enjoy the cigar, so I wouldn't worry too much about retrohaling if you're not enjoying it - cigars are still good without it

Exhale half of the smoke in your mouth then suck some more air into your mouth and try then. With a smooth aged smoke this is not required but with something a bit ruff I always do this. But retro hailing is not required but I pick up a lot more of the flavour this way

I have issues with it too.... Though when it works I get a bit more flavour.

As Monkey said: "It is pretty much essential for experiencing many of the flavours of a good cigar." Key word is 'GOOD' cigar. no use in retrohaling most cigars as it's either too powerful so it hides the flavours and burns your sinuses or you get most of the flavours in your mouth, anyways.

it may get painful a few of the first times but like many things with smoke (quiet Mo. not that kind!), you just get used to it. Then it becomes pleasant.

I give it a go with every cigar I smoke.
It feels great with some, whereas with other cigars I may not enjoy it as much.
It all depends how mild, strong or spicey a cigar is.

I'm reading a book called 'The Cigar Maker' at the moment about the Cubans moving to Florida and in it the factory owner teaching his son how to smoke tells him to run his tongue across the roof of his mouth on exhaling to really taste the cigar.

That's interesting, I will try that next time. I cant retrohale at all, it just doesn't seem to work for me. Same as smoke rings, last part of the cigar i will always try but end up looking like a hungry fish!
SilentBob is quiet no more, name change to VocalBob?
