I started work in the 70's as well - first weekly wage was ?16. I might just check how many cigars I could have bought for that!
I'm sure there are greater things in life than a fine cigar ........... but right now I can't think what they might be.

    • I started part-time work in 1998 for the princely sum of ?1.91 an hour. Think my first full time job was 1999 as an apprentice paint sprayer, that paid pretty well at about ?125 a week.

              • I turned 16 in 1999... it was probably one of the best years of my life.

Always worked too. Good job, as my Royal Navy pension means I'm entitled to no benefits, as means testing says it's over the ceiling. You serve your country for 22 years, and asylum seekers or immigrants get preferential treatment. Boils my piss!

                  • With you on that, I pay 40% tax on my pension that I paid 11% of my wages into for 30 years, go figure.

I wouldn't go that far, some young pups here that still earn there keep started at 17 here with an apprenticeship and been going ever since.

Although I will agree that a lot of people seem to think the world owes them something. What worries me most about that though how young some of those with that attitude are. You're not old enough to be owed anything!
