  • The Davidoff Dilemma

There's a Thread over on FOH at the moment, it's interesting in it's way, and concerns cigar etiquette. I haven't posted in it because what I would have to say might not go down very well over there.

The more I smoke cigars, the more I'm coming to appreciate that Zino Davidoff was probably correct, and that often I take my cigars past the point of most enjoyment and am smoking them just for the smoking's sake. In terms of clean discernible taste most cigars are done prior to reaching the band, the last third is generally a fudge of corrupted tastes caused by the build up of chemical gases during the smoking process. I've tried in the past to convince myself that the darker bitter tastes of the last third are normal and should be appreciated. The truth is I rarely do these days, cigars ? irrespective of their cost or reputation ? which are acceptable for two thirds become unacceptable when the taste turns.

Because I smoke alone my appearance doesn't bother me too much. A newly lit cigar, even if not true, lends a certain elan and status, but a cigar two thirds smoke is not so becoming and makes a prince and pauper alike look like down-and-outs. (Strangely, butts only look good on the hero in films when they're unlit).

The dilemma is, should we follow Davidoff's advice to Edwardian gentlemen, because that's what cigar smokers were back then (and when tykes like myself only smoked Woodbines, or if they got lucky, picked cigar butts from pavements), or should we follow the modern, smoke to the last pennies worth course .... even if we don't really enjoy it?
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I smoke until I stop enjoying it. I'd say this is often well over 2/3rds of a stick but then sometimes you get down somewhere to that point when it's starting to take that ever so slight turn for the worse and I think the best thing to do then is just put it down and walk away because to carry on could ruin what you had with the cigar before the change.

When I started to smoke I looked up how to smoke a cigar and it said then to stop smoking when the flavour changed to something you didn't enjoy. Mark will confirm seeing cigars with only an inch or two smoked in my garage. Its a good rule of thumb. I have smoked one to the point of needing a pin to hold it because it was so good. Each to his own is what I say.

Smoke what you enjoy I say! I generally find I leave an inch or so... But that Boil Demi Tasse I had deserved to be nubbed. I think nubbing Will always be rare for me though.

I nubbed the Bolivar PC I just finished.
          A GLORIOUS cigar.

I can confirm John has a jar with many finished cigars with an inch or two left.

Don't think I've stopped anything before the band.
As yet not had anything that was actually not nice to smoke.
Had some quite bland smokes but nothing too bad.
              YET!

But reviews, and reviews (and I'm guilty) do smoke into and often praise the last third, but in reality that third is only there to make the first two pleasant .... in future I'll be more honest, if I think it isn't up to what proceeded I'll say so .... but that attitude will never get me a job on CA.

Joking aside I often find the final third is too peppery or develops a chemical taste that I assume is tar.

I do try to smoke slow to stop this and keep it going as far as possible but sometimes i get bored. But then sometimes i have got down to the nub. As people have its each to there own and what pleasures you get out of each stick

For me a hot nub is a big no no for an enjoyable Smoke.... (waits for PeeJays pun)

I always play a game with myself to try and keep a cigar going as long as possible without managing to overheat it. Things get very tricky when down to the nub, but I get 50/50 success rate. If I get a lot of spicy pepper though I tend to stop, not my favourite flavours.

It is interesting what Davidoff said, but for a lot of people I think nubbing a cigar, or at least smoking a lot of the final third is viewed as "getting your moneys worth", a little like insisting on clearing your dinner plate even if you have eaten enough.
