  • Can you remember...

Hey guys, I thought I would ask a conversation starter for the weekend.

Can you remember your very first cigar experience? What cigar was it? ? I tried my first cigar at a pipe club meeting fourteen years ago. It was a Dominican Romeo y Julieta corona. It was ok, but not enough to persuade me away from the pipe at that time in my smoking history. I tried my first Cuban, an aged Cohiba Exquisitos, acquired in a pipe/cigar trade about two years ago. I prefer a more robust smoke now, but it was an "ah ha" moment then, and from that day on I turned to the dark side.

    What was your first experience?

Mine was a RyJ No 2 on my 50th birthday that I brought back from a holiday to Cuba. That is the one I'm smoking in my avatar photo

The first time I ever smoked a cigar was at university, needless to say neither I, nor the friends I was smoking with, knew you were not meant to inhale so we were inhlaing and couldn't believe how anyone could handle it!

I smoked a few fakes whilst in Cuba last year (which our tour guide guarenteed us were the same blend as Monte No. 2, which they may have been but with much lower quality tobacco!). The first proper cigar I smoked was a Monte No. 3, which finally swayed me!

Needless to say I am now desperate to go back to Cuba to fully appreciate being there!

Was that the aged Exquisito I sent you, Paul?

I remember back in 201X. I was a bright little 15/16 at the time and was running around doing odd jobs for people i met. These were big Eastern European men who taught me about life and what not. I had to run around shooting packages from one place to another and was paid for my time and bus tickets.
Hell, for a 15 year old, it did not seem like a bad job. I wasn't told very often what i was delivering but it was good income to fuel my teenage angstlich desires.
I held another job as well. But that $10/hour job didn't come close to the per hour pay that this alternate one provided. Retrospectively, 10/hour was good enough for such a youngling and this "other" job really wasn't a smart choice for me. Everybody i spoke to was well versed, properly dressed, and respectful. There was something off, and if i were a tad smarter, i would have easily said no. But if i were to do it all again, i would in a heartbeat!

Returning back to the bloke's house everyweek, i gained a certain trust with them. They respected me which was something unknown to someone so young. I craved it and respected them back. This way, they taught me things like Hold 'Em and the fine art of Vodka, Martinis, and to some respects, Bacardi Breezers and Appletinis.

And there was this one day where they pulled out a grand Siglo III. This cigar is still a staple in my humidor. It is my No.1 GO TO cigar. I became learned in it and i became well versed into what cigars were. Naturally, i wasn't bothered to find out what other ones i also smoked. But it did feel nice.
I was always taught by mass media and teachers and parents that smoke tasted bad, was shit for you, and did nothing beneficial. But i learned from experience that that was not the case.

Naturally, i grew out of the job and they grew out of me. In a few months time, i learned more about the real world than school, work, or my other 15 years ever DARED to teach me. I recognised that i got a taste of what i wanted in life. And i realised these weren't cheap items. So i had to make it in life, be somewhat successful, in order to have the success to smoke. It taught me to strive to be better and why school is important. Taught me a chain of command and to respect my elders. Also that ignorance is bliss.

From that, i used my excess funds to buy a small amount from the collection. These included cheap gems like Los Statos de Luxe Cremas, Jose L Piedras from 04, and a lot of other ones. I smoked them and cannot for the life of me remember what they tasted like.

But i will always remember that Siglo III

First cigar experience is not a story that is proud.

I was about 18 and my parents were away, we had a few friends round and were all having a great time. One of my friends was working so he arrived late and had a swift four pack. The conversation turned to cigars about 11pm and about 7 of us decided that we wanted to try one. Well into my cups, I remembered that the Tesco 6 miles down the road was a 24 hour store.

The friend who arrived late, we'll call him A, announced that he could drive us. Now we were dubious (quite rightly, a month later he wrote his car off on a country road. He still swears there was a blow out but I call bullshit, especially as he wrote off another car doing 60 down that road a couple of years later) but drunk. Very very drunk. He promised he'd be careful and 5 of us gladly piled into his Kia Rio, the car he swore would be the first Rio in Max Power.

I swear he was a better driver drunk, he kept to the limit and acted with consideration for the one other road user we came across. We hit Tesco and I volunteered to go in. 'Give me six of your finest, cheapest cigars' I demanded of the clerk at the kiosk. 'Do you want churchills?' was the reply, 'I don't know, I want the big ones?' was my confident reply. 'Well, we usually sell King Edwards' my new friend muttered and armed with half a dozen of these bad boys I returned to the car.

The guy in the middle seat at the back, or 'bitch seat' as it is more formally known, bottled it about half way home when he thought he saw a police car but other than that we made it home in one piece. Gingerly, we lit up out new haul in the garden. And they were fucking horrible.

My first positive experience was years later.

About 2 hours later someone started on Butters special blend and the local vicar's son (one of my bezzies, was usher at his wedding 18 months back) whitied on the couch, was that sort of party.

Funnily enough my first cuban cigar experience was I bought the same friend a couple of Bolly 3s (I think, memory is vague) as a thank you for giving me so many lifts. We passed it round like a joint until we got bored and went to play poker.

Ha ha, no it was a more exotic product and definitely nothing to do with me other than it was at my parents house.
