  • First Cigar

What or Who influenced you and when did you first start smoking cigars?
Do you remember your first cigar experience?

I was 46 years old and although I had been an occasional pipe smoker since my teens, I first tried a pipe when I was 12, I had never smoked a quality cigar. One day I was walking past Sautters cigar shop in London and looking in the window I saw the Cigar Aficionado magazine. I also caught the wonderful aroma of cigar smoke coming out of the door. A gentleman in the shop came to the door and asked if I was interested in cigars. He invited me in and showed me their selection of cigars. I said I loved the smell of cigars and would be keen to try one. He helped me selected a cigar and shows me how to cut and it. I enjoyed smoking the Cigargar in the shop before leaving with the magazine and a few more cigars to try.
    Regards, Marc

I had a few over the years on nights out but I have no idea what they were - my first cigar of note was a Montecristo No. 3 in Cuba . I was there at around this time last year and regret now for not taking advantage of it more whilst there - I also didn't realise how much it costs over here

I started reading more about it when I got back and that's when the obsession truly took hold

Oh and mine was one of those little square green villagers when I was 17, I didn't have another until I was about 27... Then pretty much when I started coming on here I started taking a bigger interest. Pipes have been about since about 25-26 infrequently.

A tubed upmann, silver tube in about 1992. Can't remember the vitola, but shared it with a friend. We had a few more, usually with coffee and tonic water.

My first cigar was in 1997 with my uni mates. At the end of exams we would anyways buy a few cheap cigars and drink copious amounts of vodka to celebrate. They were nothing more than hamlets but we enjoyed them.

Aye, my first would have been similar, Henri Wintermann perhaps? Given to me by my Mother for Christmas Day when I was 18yo. The smell of cigars at Christmas reminded her of her late father & her brother, both of whom smoked fags everyday but at Christmas they would treat themselves to a simple machine made. They say you have to get used to drinking beer & smoking cigars, well I loved the first beer & the first cigar. Just as well I never tried drugs!

Well....I had a few Hamlets at Christmas with my dad starting about 20 years ago.
Then about 15 years ago someone brought me back a cigar from Cuba..not sure what it was....I didn't know what I was doing when cutting it and the whole thing unwrapped.
Then 5 years agoish I started smoking the odd Toscano when over in Italy (The Mrs is Italian so we go over 2 or 3 times a year)
Then last year had a RyJ tubo2 and really got the bug.
