Interesting discussion guys, as I was thinking of taking out some extra insurance too. Think I might just add a reasonable alarm to the building and save money on extra premiums!

Not trying to go over old ground again and again... But freezing does not sit well with me.

Above freezing temperatures kill all forms of the organism and expose the sticks to absolutely no danger.... But hey they are your cigars so do as you wish.

For clarity there are many people (on this forum and elsewhere) who trust and use the freezing technique with apparently no negative effect.

I still don't trust it or see it's necessity.

Perhaps the answer is to keep apart cigars bought from different sources where possible to prevent cross infestation.

Going to (try to) keep it for at least 10 years, its a very pretty stick! No idea whether it'll be any good or not but it looks perfect!

Freezing - have done it for years as have a lot of collectors, retailers and HSA themselves (supposedly all production Cubans since 2008 are deep frozen but it depends if you trust their process). I freeze all cigars I do not know the provenance of, everything production before 2008 and all custom rolls. My method:
1. Put in strong double ziplock bags and suck out air
2. Put in Freezer for 3-4 days
3 Take out at room temp for a day or so
4. Put in storage

I have never had any problems and never had any detectable taste difference (I have tried A/B testing in the early days). I have also never heard of anyone who freezes who has stopped for any reason to do with taste or degradation.

I also bag all boxes for mid/long term storage. I do this principally because I believe it enhances the taste/focus/aroma but it has the added benefits of buffering any humidity change (as there is minimal air exchange) and protecting against any potential beetle outbreaks.

Insurance - This is a specialist insurance job just like insuring a wine cellar. Many of the similar brokers will cover you but you will have to keep up to date cellar records. One would imagine the only insurance with the main-brand insurers (if they will cover it as it may be classed 'perishable goods') would be an itemised entry on the 'individual items/collections' list.

How will above freezing temperature kill any organisms never mind all.

I am very similar to monkey with leaving my sticks in the freezer for 48hrs but then I put them in the fridge for 24hrs though before returning them to the humidor. If you dont like freezing thats your choice and if you smoke a cigar a beetle crawls into your mouth dont be complaining
