Cigar Insurance?

Hi folks

Just as my main humidor is overfilling and a new one is required it made me think that I should do a stock take... which led me to think that I should insure them against fire/theft/flood etc.

Does anyone insure their cigars, if so, could you kindly provide indicative details... e.g. is it something you add to your B&C insurance? What about policy cost, is it a % of value?

We have touched on this briefly not that long ago, in short talk to your insurance company....... In reality (my partner is an insurance administrator.) this isn't going to be easy to implement, many companies are not going to want to touch this with a barge pole. Many that will are going to charge an exorbitant amount for the liberty and will make you jump through hoops.

I am certain that they are more likely to do this if the cigars are of historic and "serious" financial and collecting value I.E. Not for smoking.

IMO the best post in the last discussion was directed at me (I don't remember who by without looking.) after I made an assumption.... "Clarity is the only thing that is required."

The only people who can give you any clarity about YOUR specific situation is an insurance underwriter and not anybody on this or any other forum.



Out of interest, how much would you think your collection is worth in monetary value?

I did a search for insurance but didn't see anything - thanks for the summary, i'll have a dig now for that thread.

Not a huge "collection", around 300 cigars (~?4.5k)

It is cheaper to get a large fireproof safe than insurance.

Since you're contemplating insurance, you're really serious about this, no? so just get a tight, waterproof, fireproof safe and it'll be much cheaper than insurance.
And leave only important sticks in there when you start getting towers and cabinets

I've got more than that and there's no way it would cost $8000!! Are you only getting LEs, Trinidad, and cohiba?!? :/

That's about ?15 per cigar at UK prices.... Not too far off the mark I suppose. Prices here are amongst the highest in the world for sure!

I think once your cigars have been through a fire even in a fire proof safe they are fit for nothing but the bin if you don't agree try for yourself by putting one of your own in the oven low for 30 mins sure it won't go up in smoke but it's still fucked

oh it was more just a description of what kind of safe to get. frankly, if my house burnt down, i'd have bigger things to worry about.. and sides, if you have home insurance, why would you pay more for the cigar insurance if all you're worried about is fire damage.

you do have reason, ya wascally wabbit. don't let's pretend that the safe actually IS fireproof. it was just more a description for what to get, really protects against floods and thievery.

If at all possible it's going to cost you a packet for probably very little return.

Personally I'd put aside what you would pay in a premium and if the worst was to happen you would probably have saved more than enough to replace them and more.

Is this just for fire/theft? I'm assuming you can't insure against mold/beetle? Always worries me, not got a huge collection, about 195 cubans and a couple of others but it would still be pretty painful lose it all!

Coincidentally have any of you ever had trouble with either of the above, when you read the forums they seem quite common but I've never seen it mentioned on here?

I suspect the beetle problem is more common in warm climes and 195 Cubans isn't huge?!

Well it's been proven beetles can and do hatch under lower temperatures the reason I believe for the low beetle problem in the UK is the fact the majority of the market was (and still is but shrinking) Cuban cigars which are frozen before leaving Cuba. Though if you are buying from grey market vendors that may not be the case. Also the NC manufactures do not as a whole freeze there stock to kill the larvae. Anyway I freeze all suspect stock and bombs/trades as well.

Though mold is a different story as really just one of those things that happens

Found the answer myself so for all those like me who didn't know

'To do this, place all of your cigars from your humidor in an air tight bag, preferably a sandwich bag, and try to remove most of the air from the bag. Place the bag in your refrigerator and let it sit for at least 4 hours. From there, move the bag to a freezer and let it sit for no less than 8 hours (overnight). It is recommended to let them sit in the freezer for a full day just to make sure all the beetles are dead. After this time, transfer them back to a refrigerator for a couple more hours to start warming them up, and then bring them to room temperature. It takes a long time simply because you must gradually cool down and then warm up the cigars to prevent swelling and cracking of the cigars.'

Thanks Rascal. The one I'm worried about is I have a hand rolled figurado from Havana freshly rolled by Castelar Cairo (World record Cigar Roller) as we stood for photos with him (shameless tourist!) I can't imagine the leaves were frozen in this case. Does freezing affect the stick at all, i.e. how do you stop moisture etc?
