Maybe it was my guess again:
Wasting as little cigar as possible.
Also, maybe it's also more efficient when it's cooled down again.

I purge if it starts to get too hot or bitter in the last third once or twice at the most, whilst it's still lit. Not sure of the purging whilst unlit, Scotty?
