  • Black tar on cigar.

So this is my first instance of Black Tar build up. Only other time I saw this was on my mate's RE Asia Pacifico a while back.
Glad It happened to this stick as it wasn't as good to begin with. (and not the rare RE!)

Kept accidentally at 40% for 3 weeks, it was ridiculously dessicated. Didn't cut it as I always twist the pigtail off. This time It crumbled off instead and lit up in the cold. 20 min in, it started secreting this black tar at the cap. Within 20 min, I had already purged 4 times. This stained my fingers as I went in to open the pigtail further to seee the extent of the damage.

Above, there's the Shiny, fatt, black blob of a stain that had arisen.
This leaves any cigar unsmokeable as it stains the flavour with a bitterness unmatched by even Simon Cowell's criticism of a grade school talent show. It also can stain your clothes or skin too so watch out!
This was my experience and I'm not too angry as I knew it wasn't gonnna be a good cigar to start with.

Prevent this with good storage and frequent purging. I do it every 10-20 draws now. Mainly out of habit.

Is this caused by the sticks being under humidity for a period?

I've never seen this before and didn't know it existed, but according to this you can fix the problem is by cutting more of the cap past the tar:

Last week when Jerry and I sat down to record episode 36 of Your Questions, My Answers (YQMA) we both lit up a Por Larranaga that we received courtesy of Rich from the Fan Forums. About an inch and a half into the cigar I started to notice some tar droplets on the cut head. […]

It also seems that the cause is a bit of a mystery, a manufacturer the writer contacted suggested it might be sap left over from the fermentation process and is very rare (thankfully!)

                  Don't twist off the pigtail.
Don't allow the cigar to dry out.
                  Don't smoke in the cold.
                  Don't frequently purge.

                  Here endeth the lesson....

Hmmmmm. What's wrong with a habitual purge?
Now normally I wouldn't start purging until the second half or third third but this one was needing one.
But what would be wrong with too often one? Other than the fact that you're probably losing smoking tobacco whilst doing it? Or I guess I'm also disrupting the air pattern that's normally supposed to occur in the stick?

May I add: It's basically for the purpose of dislodging tar build up in the "filter" tobacco of the stick.
makes the taste feel smoother and cleaner after. And makes you able to enjoy it for another 1-3cm more

I purge if it starts to get too hot or bitter in the last third once or twice at the most, whilst it's still lit. Not sure of the purging whilst unlit, Scotty?
