I'm pretty new to the world of smoking cigars.

Reading a lot of reviews and was interested to know whether when you first started smoking you could identify certain flavours as well as you do now?

Or is it something that grows as your experience of smoking increases?

Comes with experience, also practice retrohaling as you will pick up more "flavours" that way.

Retrohaling second that will deffo help pick up flavours. I am still learning myself and am slowly getting there but like anything things will come with time

Except it's an inprecise science, because what you think you've found in a Monte 4 today you may not find in a Monte 4 from the same box tomorrow .... ces la vie!

I agree it all comes with time, and experiencing the many different cigars around.
You'll find characteristics you like and dislike. Reviews are helpful, but it's all about your own experiences.

I began to pick up chocolate and pepper quite quickly, if you want to give it a reasonably cheap test get yourself an Oliva Serie G Belicoso (chocolate) and an Aging Room M356 (pepper). They are both easily available and IMO are very in your face with the afore mentioned flavours, once you can pin a flavour it's much much easier to pick it up in the future even when it's more subtle.

Beware though while the Aging Room has bold and lovely flavours, the two I have tried have had very bad burn characteristics.... This may in part be due to the RH I had been keeping them at though, as I have been advised here to try dropping the humidity to 65% for a couple of weeks before smoking.

Incidently I emailed Oliveroscigars who produce Aging Room and they apologised but offered nothing particularly constructive as to what could have caused the bad burning issues, other than "cigars are individual, try another it might be better."
