  • Describing the taste .........

I was enjoining a smoke the other day and trying to work out the flavours. At one stage I thought "mmm dried cherries" and as I was congratulating myself on my palette developing, the 'taste' disappeared and I decided I was just trying to be clever.
This evening I read a review of the cigar and it mentioned 'dried fruit'. !!!!!!!!

My question is, and this might sound dumb, but hey .........
Is that normal ? Getting a sense, feeling or imagination of let's say chocolate, oak or whatever then next second a feeling of something else ? More like 'this brings to mind wild meadows after spring rain' Than actually tasting like a wet field.

    Hope that makes sense.

Totally, and that's where those with a more developed palate get their descriptions from: sense of, reminding of, smells like, tastes like, hint of this/that and the list goes on. Nice to hear you've made a progression there Maxsi. Personally, I'm a bit pants at it, but good onya

Oh yeah, some even get a whiff of 'lady garden' in/on their smokes. I'll put my hand up to that one, albeit not often

The very man, thanks for popping in MrC You definitely tuned me into that one. On occasions, whilst fiddling with my humidor, I get a discernible waft of a box full.

Salty milk and coins??? Going to have to think about that one for awhile....

On a more serious note, tasting notes is something I don't get. I see it in cigars, pipe tobacco, whiskey (whisky), beer, wine, etc. I personally don't get the comparisons that relate to food taste and smells. I hear words like plum, raisens, dried fruit, chocolate, leather, ect., and I haven't ever tasted those things in any cigar, pipe tobacco or alcohol. Depending on what I'm consuming, all I usually detect is the flavour of the item...tobacco, whiskey, beer, whatever. I can detect smoky, spicy, fruity, lady garden, or whatever, but that's about it. It either tastes good, or bad. Perhaps my taste buds are challenged or have a low IQ. Still, I wonder what I'm missin'. Is it possible to just enjoy the flavours of tobacco and experience the nuances of flavours associated with tobacco, without finding food words to describe it?
