  • Advice needed: How to reduce humidor temperature?

    Hi guys,

I really need to get the temp in my humi down. It's currently peaking at 73F.
Ultimately I'd like to get it to 70 or less...

    ...what are my options?

Please bare in mind my house is normally closed up, whilst at work,
therefore the house has no cool spots (under stairs, no basement, etc etc)

    Many thanks,

Yup, a winecooler type set-up is the most affordable way to temp control but honestly i would not worry too much. As long as your sticks come from good sources (or you freeze them all first) there is no real problem being at 73 degF.

A little bigger, so less likely to need upgrading..

            Thanks monkey.
It got me a little worried - the temperature.
You honestly think 73F is okay?

JJFox and Cgars both recommended the temp be under 70.
They said that anything above 70 is bad for the cigars...

I thought the high temperature allow for Beatles. But that said, as monkey said, if the sticks come from a reputable source or put into the freezer on receipt prior to your humidors, you should have no problem at all.

My Wineador only switches on to cool 15 mins every two hours, as the UK isn't really hot enough to worry (sadly)

Cigars were purchased from JJFox, so yes: a reputable source.

                Thanks,

If your thinking of rushing out and buying a wine cooler just remember that they need to be thermoelectric in cooling method to avoid condensation/moisture build up.

With your temperature climbing, does your humidity fluctuate a lot with it? If so I would look at investing in a better quality humidifying solution such as beads.

Humidity doesn't fluctuate a lot in comparison tbh.
Decided against the wine cooler for now.
Will monitor the humi and continue to try and move it around the house etc.

Will try 'dry boxing' my next few smoking sessions too...

                    Thanks again guys

I've been looking at the same problem all summer long - I have a big coolbox with beads in so the humidity is rock solid but the temps did climb to 73 or so. So i froze the lot in a big batch which was painless and hasn't affected them one iota. I did read somewhere that if you are looking to age then 60-65 may be more preferable but i cant find anything that is big enough (and has thermoelectric) to hold my sticks.

That's why I stayed clear of a tupperdore as the temp was up and down like a fiddlers elbow.

I don't really worry too much over temperature now. As long as it's not ridiculously hot and the humidity of the sticks is too high, there's not too much to fret over.

Last year I was stressing out over this though. My humi was at over 80F. What I did was freeze the ThermalTake mats i use for my laptop when it's running extra demanding stuff, and slide a couple under the humi and lay a couple on top (I have four). If you have these things, they cool a humi pretty well.

Temp was 73/74 yesterday and today.
                            Humidity is approx 67-68%

Fingers crossed all should be well...
I've dry boxed a BHK overnight for today, so will see how it performs.
Happy to let them rest longer, but it's a dear friends funeral today so
gonna fire one up in his memory later today.

Thanks again for all of your feedback.
                            Si
