Singles & expanding the repertoire

I'm new to regular cigar smoking and have pretty much stuck to Cohiba Siglo II thus far, partly because Cohibas are what I've been given by the old man before and Siglo II because of the price point. I have enjoyed them, particularly the second half of the smoke where more intense flavours develop. I don't really have any cigar knowledge as such but understand that they're generally not a 'beginners' cigar - the newbie guides I've read seem to be weighted towards lighter smokes.

I want my next cab to be something different, so what I wanted to ask was what cigars should I be looking to sample based on my enjoyment of the Siglo II? I've had a trawl online and on the forum but don't seem to find myself any the wiser.

Ideally looking for something around the same price point and a max smoking time of 1hr. I'm strictly an evening smoker, only really after meals or drinks.

Appreciate it's a very subjective thing but any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

Hey BB, you could always check out reviews on the 'net for the Ramone Allones Small Club Coronas. They're tasty However, not having had a Siglo II, I can't make a direct comparison. Perhaps you should source some singles from various brands before committing to a box. Cuts the subjectivity right down then

I'm with CJ rather than buy a box I would try a selection of singles to try. The

Uppmann petite corona, Partagas short, RASCC, Por langoria PC, Bolivar PC,

Are all (roughly) the same size and smoking time as the Siglo 2 so would be a good place to start.

Perfect, thanks for the suggestions everyone. It is the plan to buy a few singles first before committing, can't think of anything worse than shelling out ?300 - ?400 on a cab only to be indifferent about them!

Absolutely! Some aficionados would say sample a stick from the box you plan to buy, but I think your plan to sample several sticks before you decide on a box is a good way to go, too.

However, not having had a Siglo II, I can't make a direct comparison.

I'll have a crack at making some short notes for comparison purposes and add them to the thread, though as a newbie I won't be able to vouch for the quality of them!

When I started smoking I would tend to stick to the Petit Corona size as they were the cigars I enjoyed the most, particularly the Siglo II.
You have ordered some great smokes there that you will enjoy and that will give you a broad taste of different flavours in the same format.
Never be afraid to try something different though. Variety is the spice of life after all

Some fine cigars in there. A Party Short with three or more years on it is, for me, smoking nirvana. As others have said, that's quite a nice range of cigars, all a bit different, so should help you pick which path you want to explore for a bit.

When I first started getting into the cigar thing properly (after a year or so of just having the occasional stick for the sake of it), I did exactly the same as you - tried a range of PCs to get a flavour for different brands, and then started exploring in more depth once I'd figured out what was my sort of smoke. As I've hung around for longer, I've branched out even more - but the petit corona sampling I did was certainly a good foundation for where I've gone since.

Based on your liking of siglo 2, i think you would be safer with por latranaga petit coronas, san cristobal el principe pr perhaps trinidad reyes or coloniales. Other recommendations like bolivar partagas or ramon allones might be too peppery for your liking. Just a thought.

I understand the concept of age improving cigars, though presumably when I'm ordering one it's going to be nowhere near three years old? Assuming that's the case, can you buy them aged (presumably at a premium)?

I don't have a stocked humidor to speak of, so what goes in currently goes out again in relatively short order!

The age you get singles at is based on luck, you can always ask your retailer what box code their singles are coming from.
