Weather and cigars!

Following on from the feedback from todays "what are you smoking today?" segment of the forum, I was thinking about how the weather can affect your smoking habits.

I was up around 4am this morning and because it was a really nice morning I lit up the JL No2 at about 07:15.
Had the weather been poor then there is no way I would smoke until late morning or early afternoon.

I also do the same thing on holiday;I will have my first cigar earlier in the day because the weather is nice outside.I had never thought about this until Robusto remarked about heading down to his smoke shack around the same time as myself this morning.

How can the weather have an influence on whether you smoke or not?

Thats a nice early smoke Whisky, Ive had a small cigar whilst out birdwatching/photographing in the past at first light and I must admit what with the sounds of nature and a cigar I was in a very relaxed mood. I like to sit out in the garden in the evening and chill with a drink and cigar but the weather is not too reliable when I get the chance too, dont like filling the house up with smoke too often. But I have and enjoyed, as Im sure you did, an early morn' smoke. Nice one.

I am always alert in the morning, Whisk. I am programmed to rise early.

I can't smoke during the day normally with the day job, but I like an early morning smoke when it's the weekend and I know my missus and boys will be in bed still by the time I've enjoyed a robusto.

I slope off down my garden path in my dressing gown with a big mug of tea and make myself comfortable on the sofa in my shack. It is extremely quiet and still. This morning was beautiful.

I may be bonkers, but I think the pre-draw, the lighting up, the setting the cigar to life are all enhanced and more sensual in the morning when it's so still.

For me, it's the ultimate in withdrawing into myself.

And it balances the opposite enjoyment I get from striding round with a big cigar shouting to the world, albeit in my mind, Fuck You!

you're right whisky, never thought about it before but there's nothing like an early morning cigar on a nice day when out fishing. The calmness of the morn and aromas of a nice stogie just go together...

The Weather Dictates the Puro!

Hola Amigos,

I couldn't agree more with the morning puro crowd. Can't think of a better way to start a beautiful day than with a fine puro - Trinidad Reys, Boliver Bonitas, HdM EL 07 - and a cup of fine Mexican joe.

Regarding the weather, it only rains at night in the beautiful State of Mind, Mexico. But having said that, some days are more beautiful than others, and the quality of the morning/day guides my puro selection .

For instance, this evening, which was quite lovely, I choose the expuisite Monticristo Sublime EL 08, which I enjoyed while skyping with senor Cohiba IV. I wouldn't have wasted such a fine puro on a lesser day, in which case, I might have chosen a less expensive puro, like a RASS or a Bolivar RC. And if, God forbid, the the weather ever turns for the worst, I might be forced to burn a non-Cuban, like the ones mentioned on the forum.

Bottom line, the time of day and the weather play an important role in my puro selection.

But that's just me, TJ, TJCoro, and BJ and Catalina have a whole different philosophy regarding the weather and puros.

I think most people are trying to get an additional box for long term storage, seeing as they are such a good smoke.

How right you are Kdot; speaking of that, it`s 08:00 and it`s a lovely sunny morning here on the West coast, I can hear a JL No2 calling from my humidor.

So many people spot on here with their thoughts on this one I cant quote them all.
I certainly believe the weather has a big part as I would never contemplate smoking seriously early in the morning for example in the middle of winter.
For me, early morning smokes are rare but when the come along they can be quite a magical experience. They generally only occur when on holidays and are accompanied by a bucket of my favourite Medaglia D'Oro coffee.
It either happens if the wife & kids have gone out early and I can wander out to the garden smoke one off, gather my thoughts and contemplate life, the universe and everything. Or it would be something like my holiday fishing trips, sitting by the docks, watching the world scurry past with handfuls of tackle (Ooer) soaking up the ambience, the sounds, the smells, the gentle warmth of the rising sun on your face, the anticipation of the skipper heading us out from the shore.
Fantastic, makes me want to go out and have one now.

Hot weather definetly changes things for me, tend to smoke a lot more.

BBQs are a great place for a cigar - had a Monte Edmundo and PE in one go yesterday.

Even at home it's nicer - windows wide open, sun shining in. Bliss.

It's true, Mark. It is - sorry about this - quite an intellectual moment, this sublime smoking time thing. It brings together many sensations and thoughts - and, above all, some rested and peaceful time for me.

It's multisensory... but I have a question that has been on my mind for ages and I haven't asked here...

When you (we) light up, do you stop smelling the cigar because the mouth takes over? By that, I mean does your ambient sense of the smoke smell vanish?

I think mine does, so I have to take moments - usually when smoking on my tod, btw - when I put my nostrils in a slipstream about six inches away from the cigar in order to fully appreciate the smell.

I'm not being ironic up top. I do think savouring cigars is pretty intellectual because you get more out of it if you give it a lot of thought - and it gives more back to you.

On that bombshell, I'm off with a Juan Lopez to my garden to enjoy the sun and quiet before we rock the Broadstairs Bandstand.

Mark - Did you Photoshop in the cigar in Cowell's gob? I know he's a cigarette chuffer. Does he do cigars as well?

I always take time about halfway through to stop and wave the cigar round in small circles about 6 inches aways to fully appreciate the aroma in it's purest form direct from the cigar as opposed to drawing it myself and having the taste tainted by whatever I had been drinking.

Robusto, I tend to smell the cigar as Im smoking, especially if it has chocolate notes before lighting up I will continue to smell it and savour it more. Mind you I can never remember the cigars from the past that held those lovely aromas, so I guess thats why i still take in the smelling side, hoping to re-connect.
