  • Newbie & Humidor!

Hello, glad I found this forum!

I started enjoying cigars a few months ago after sampling one of my friends Romeo y Juliettas whilst on a night out. Having never smoked (anything) before and being a strict non-drinker I assumed that I'd be sick instantly - however was pleasantly surprised to find the cigar had what could be best described by a novice as "coffee-like" characteristics and I really enjoyed it.

Fast forward a couple of months and I've bought myself a cheap ?50 desktop humidor (humidifier puck & hygrometer included) I first calibrated my hygrometer (salt water solution) and got it reading 75%, I then let the puck sit in distilled water for 30 minutes, fitted it in the humidor and then put a whiskey class into my humidor to allow it to breath in water (i didn't fancy going down the route of painting the cedar with distilled water)

I checked the hygrometer after three days and got a reading of 70%

At what point is the humidor ready? Some people have suggested leaving the glass in the humidor for 4/5 days whilst others have suggested 2/3 weeks, I don't mind how long the process takes but want to get things right first time (for the sake of the cigars I'll be storing!) if I leave the glass in there too long could I over humidify the wood? (if there is such a thing)

Meanwhile this is a great forum and I've already picked up loads of snippets of advice already

    Advice much appreciated!

    Hi FireArm,
it's different for all humi's, check it stays at 70% for a couple more days, remove the whisky glass & add cigars..just keep an eye on it daily for a while & watch for fluctuations..outside temp changes won't help your readings, try to keep the humi in a stable temp area..

For me as soon as it was stable I filled it full of cigars and had no problems. Just watch out over the next week as the cigars you add in the box will absorb the moisture so check the solution/humidity levels.

Don't worry too, you cannot do much damage if humidity levels are in the 65-75% bracket. Also you will keep opening closing the lid, remember to give enough window for your humidor to recharge its humidity levels.

First welcome, as to seasoning your humi your starting well. I would personally take the shot glass out leave the puck in and leave it for a couple of days if you keep seeing 70% then your good to go.

Couple of suggestions though try to upgrade to a digital hygrometer if your working with analogue.
Seriously think about upgrading the puck, it's a breading ground for mould and it's not good and maintaing humidity. I would recommend either beads or boveda packs.

Sorry Fordi..I have to disagree...anything over 70% can encourage mold, especially with a temperature fluctuation..IMHO 60-70 is a safe area...
          I could be wrong!...

Wow 5 replies in the space of 30 minutes! Thanx chaps!

My intention is to upgrade to a digital hygrometer next month, I've never really come accross beads or boveda packs before, how do they work?

I read about plastic pucks going manky lol - I tried to counter this as best I could by using distilled water with "anti mold and fungal properties" but agree that I would like an alternative to the cheap ?1.50 puck that came with the humidor lol

Defo a matter of opinion but the markers on my analogue gauge don't show that %.

I never let it go above 70 anyway.

Beads and boveda are two way humidity devices that are release and absorb humidity to a set %

                  Sligub they look excellent,

I'm just using a small desktop humidor at the minute - how long do these beads usually remain "charged" for?

Can the bead just be inserted into bottom of the humidor in the provided in the mesh bag?

                  Once again thanx

Last time I charged mine was three months ago but it will depend on the seal of your humi and the outside humidity. Yep you can put them in like that or they do offer pucks or tubes depending on what will fit best. If you look at the heartfelt link they have a calculator somewhere that tells you how much you need though you can't have too many.

When you say you can't have too many do you mean that in the...

"you can't have too many cigars" sense

                      or

"you cant have too many... because things will go wrong" lol

Anyway thanx everyone for all your help, Im gonna get home this evening and take my whiskey class out and see what humidity i get.

Next step is to actually buy some cigars to put in there!

Welcome to the forum firearm Good to see you're taking some care to get set up properly. Make use of the search facility and have a good read about ideal intro sticks for those new to cigars. Some finer more complex cigars, may be difficult for an inexperienced smoker to fully appreciate, and thus you may want to save them for a little wys down the road. However be mindful that an individuals thoughts on a certain cigar are very subjective, and what works for some doesn't always for others. Hope you enjoy your journey!

Welcome mate! Yeah I agree, anything above 70 is a no no. I'd got for 65ish. The beads are great, but they're expensive and you'll get stung for duty.
