I'm just planning to get a couple of boxes from Berlin while I'm out there on a trip with my wife, it wasn't booked as a cigar buying trip so I'm unlikely to exceed 200, I was thinking more like 50 - we're saving for a deposit on a house so I can't go too mad!!

The fact that you can bring back more from EU countries though could potentially mean that its actually more cost effective to bulk buy from there, although cigars are more expensive you would only need one trip to bring back 200 cigars, whereas you would need four trips to take back the same amount from non-EU countries.

I have just had another thought on this, do you think there would be problems if the person you're travelling with also brings back some cigars with them? So between the two of you, you bring back 400 from the EU (without running into potential questioning) or 100 from non-EU countries?

I have no intention of bringing 400 cigars with us, I just wondered out of curiosity

As long as they are for personal use then they can bring back their allowance but if asked they would have to say they were for themselves. The exception to this is if you are married or have shared finances e.g a joint bank account you can share your duty free allowance.

Or if it is your Dad and he says it's your Christmas present etc. They can be gifts, just not paid for or paid for in kind.

I didn't realise that you could share you allowance if you're married, I thought you would need your wife (or husband!) to say that its a gift for you, which in effect it would be, that would probably be the best option if you do want to bring back more than the 50 or 100

I can't see them asking too many question. When I came back from Cuba I went through the red channel as I had too much rum. He asked a few questions about dutyable goods we had on us and told us not to worry.

They aren't interested in people with about the right amounts.

Havent seen too many people discuss lighters/humidors/ misc other accessories. Methinks online is the way to go for lighters and the sorts. Foam pucks and other small things.. Not so much. Cigars? I'll stray away from THAT discussion

I ALWAYS buy online. There's only one specialist in my city and the variety and value are both crap. Most of the cigars I buy are from cgars. Unparallelled service and the best legal value in the UK.

I will say I often look to foreign companies to find what remains of discontinued cigars I just desperately have to have.

I Just asked a website in USA to tell me the cost of shipping and weight of cigars on $86 (?57) order of 20 robusto cigars in a box.
They said cost of shipping is $60 (?40) and the weight is 2 lb which is about 900 grams (which is just stupid weight for 20 cigars, she is definitely doing something wrong and not feeling our need for the exact net weight of the cigars).
Excise duty these days is about ?220 on a Kg of cigars so excise duty alone on 900 grams will be about ?200. No custom duty because cost + shipping is less then ?135.
So in total ?57 + ?40 = ?97 + ?200 = ?297 + ?60 (VAT at 20% on ?297) = ?357 + ?13 (handling fee) = ?370
Do the maths, compare ?57 to ?370 and say it with me.... fuck the world!!

because thats the rule
