Hi All,

I gave up smoking cigarettes some time ago and about 3 months ago was given a Henri Wintermans Deluxe Corona after a friends baby was born, we all stood outside on his patio, had a beer and a smoke. I really enjoyed it!

So I went on this very forum and looked at 'new smoker' threads to learn the ropes and pick your collective brains. I was hoping to find some budget cigars for around ?10 (and lower) that should tickle my fancy, unfortunately my fancy remained un-tickled by anything other than The Wintermans and a Phillies 'Titan'. Now I really enjoy smoking these cigars but I am aware I sound like someone saying "Yeah, I love wine......my favourite? Its between Blue Nun and Hock".

I have tried a few cheap Cuban's (H.Upmann Jr and such-like) and just do not enjoy the taste, I have a very good Cigar Shop (So I'm told) Turmeaus Tobacconist a two minute walk from my office in Liverpool, so help.......help this poor classless idiot become the suave, handsome (Perhaps only prayer and a miracle could help me here) and Hilarious promoter of the noble art of smoking turd looking smoking devices.

Welcome to the forum DD. I guess like many things in life, it's about what you enjoy as opposed to what you think you should, and whatever floats your boat is a winner. Perhaps you just need to float a few more and see what else you like. Weigh anchor at your local tobacconists a bit more and dive in.

Hi, it's a shame termeus doesn't have a sampling lounge. But termeus in Chester does. It may be worth going there. I can't see me enjoying a cigar outside in this weather. Where do you work in Liverpool?

Well done on giving up the cigarettes, how long have you been off them?

It might be an idea to try some light cubans to start with. Hoyo de monterrey Petit Robusto's got me hooked on cubans and can be had for under a tenner.

There was a thread not too long ago about budget smokes. There were some great suggestions on there. Have a search for it, i'll try and link it when i get in the office.

Don't worry about what people think. Cigars are all down to personal preference. Some people hate certain ones and some love them. We all have different palates.

Hi Danny. Grats on kickin' the fags. Sounds to me you really dig your Dutch cigars and aren't quite ready for Cubans, nothing wrong with that and Termeus have a good selection of smokes from Holland. Smoke what you like. If you pull out a Henri Winterman's at a cigar gathering you will have people poo-pooing your choice but f 'em.
I know a European cigar retailer, quite a big retailer, who at every cigar gathering pulls out his pack of Camels. He gets plenty of dirty looks from people who don't know him, does he care?
The thing about hand rolled Cuban cigars is that there is a huge difference in consistency compared to Dutch style dry cured homogenised tobacco cigars.
You can have a bad experience with one regarding draw or lack of flavour which might well put you off them, given what you've paid for one.
Talk to your tobacconist, explain what you'd like. Spend a little bit of money one one, as a one off, something like a Hoyo Epicure No. 2 or a Trinidad Robusto T. Make sure you have a hour or so to yourself with a drink and the cigar and give it a go.
A lot of cigar smokers I know have had an "epiphany moment" where they finally "get it". Sometimes it just takes time.

Took me 30 years on B&H and around another 10 on Hamlet before I crossed the Rubicon!

Welcome Danny - I know many people who only smoke Dutch cigars but the secret is to enjoy what YOU prefer I should throttle back on the gushing sentiments though - IMO. Enjoy your time here.

Hi, think I will make the visit there when the weather is a bit nicer, I have put it on my 'to-do' list along with the mirco-brewery in Birkenhead! I work in the Corn Exchange building.

Thank you, I have been off them about 18 months now, don't get me wrong I've had the odd one or two when I have been frequenting an establishment called The Ship & Mitre or just generally out for a drink if other people are smoking.

I did see that thread and did try a few that where suggested , H.Upmann Junior, Romeo y Julieta Petit and Guantanemera(Spelling?!?!?) as well as a few others that I cannot think of.

This is where the whole Blue Nun/Hock situation comes in to play, because if you go into a shop such as this and they ask you what you like, if I responded honestly I believe he might take his shoe off and attempt to beat me to death with it, so I really appreciate all you feedback and will go ahead and take in your suggestions.

I think you maybe right about the 'Epiphany moments' I have been reading the Cigar Monologues Blog for the last few months and although it is very well written I have tried some of the cigars he has reviewed and just dont appreciate them, which I understand is not down to the cigars but my uncultured palate.

Right I am off to smoke my last Upmann Junior, before I return to the aficionado's choice (H.W.'s).
