Suggestions for a newcomer to the Cigar Scene

Hi Guys,

Jonny here, Long time lurker first time posting here.

I took up the wonderful pastime of cigar smoking in August. Considering I never smoked a day in my life I didn?t know if I would like it and I was afraid I would get addicted yada yada.

Turns out I love it! Plus I don?t think its an addiction I could ever get, I?m a strict once or twice a month smoker.

Anyway- Long story short I was absolutely blown away by the Monty Open regatta,. I nearly cried tears of joy smoking it. I tried my best to like the Cohiba Siglos 1s and 2s- they just don?t sit with me. My old dependable is the Partagas Milles Fleurs.

This is what I have tried so far. Next pay day I am looking to branch out and try something new. I have my eye on the Bolivar Britannicas as I have heard they are meant to be great? Can the more educated here suggest where I could take my taste buds next?

As to ideas I always recommend trying a large selection of marcas(brands) to find what you like, a good place to start are the petite corona(PC) size as they give a good idea of the brand without costing a fortune or taking to much time.

To add to the above, I personally wouldn't waste time or money chasing the regionals(bolivar britanica) or limiteds until you have an idea of what your looking for in a cigar.

Firstly I would like to agree with you on how much I enjoyed the open regatta, especially as the open range gets such a battering by other cigar smokers ( i have not tried any others in the line). And in support of the advice sligub has given maybe you could try a sampler of a certain size or range of cigar to give you a better idea. Atb

August to mid Jan..approx 11 cigars...

Open Regatta 46X135 2009 to 2013 = "blown away"'.
Partagas Mille Fleur 42X129 c.1955 to 2013 = "old dependable".
Cohiba I 40X102 1994 to 2013 = "don't sit with me".
Cohiba II 42X129 1994 to 2013 "don't sit with me".

Open Regatta...only had 2 from 2009 they were that bad I wouldn't buy another.
Partagas Mille Fleur...smoked dozen's, had a few shockers & a few plugged but as you say "dependable".
Cohiba I...I'd never recommend a fresh Cohiba to anyone...they need age.
Cohiba II...I'd never recommend a fresh Cohiba to anyone...they need age.

So far so good, it's difficult to give any advice other than try other sizes & brands,(vitola & marque), get an aged cigar if possible..for the time being stay away from Limited Editions, Regional Editions & anything NC, (Non Cuban).
Montecristo, Hoyo de Monterrey, H.Upmann, Romeo y Julietta are not bad places to start & each marque has a good range of vitola..

Hi,
as a newcomer myself i opted to get a range of samplers from different brands and of different sizes, i now have 45 cigars waiting to be smoked
Given the amount you think you will smoke perhaps a sampler like this http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/cgars-best...er-p-7120.html might be a good place to start? then add a few other sizes from the same brand to compare the difference that size\shape makes.

It is bewildering at first with so much choice, the best thing to do is just dive in and try lots of different brands and sizes.

As a general guide, two cigars that are the same brand and size will have much different characteristics if one is say 7 years old and one only 2 years old.
Different size cigars from the same brand (eg. Cohiba Siglo VI and Lancero) will have different profiles as well.

You will over time begin to know what you like in a cigar, it is something you cannot rush and is a big part of the joy and fun of smoking cigars.

I'll be the evil one and recommend that you don't avoid non-cubans. In fact I'd recommend seeking them out - but like anything do you research before you buy.

Hello all,


also new to smoking cigars. Intending to buy a humidor in the next month or so.


I'm only likely to smoke 10-15 a year. Maybe a few more. Have enjoyed a few cigars over the last few years and have been fascinated since going into a dedicated seller.


For my wedding I got Romeo y Julieta Tubos 3 which was a lovely smoke. Not tried too many better cigars.


What do people honk of the partagas Tubos 2 and the Chiba Siglo IV?

I've only been smoking cigars for around a year now.
When I was new to it all, I tried loads... and I mean loads!
All the reviews etc, they do help, but what really counts is your opinion
you'll find out what works for you by sampling some of the many brands etc

I didn't take to a lot of cigars.
The ones I like now, are the Half Corona (H.Upmann) and the Behike.
These stand out to me more than anything else I personally have tried.

It can't be emphasized enough that everyone picks up on different
tastes and flavours. Cigars really are a personal thing.
It's a case of trying cigars and finding out what works for you

Hi mate i myself are new to this and still getting to grips with choice of cigars. I have had a few but the one that has stuck out for my newbie palate was the RP 15th anniversary toro beautiful smoke and like yourself smoking the monty open felt the same whilst i had that. I will be purchasing more of these when my humi comes this week
