It is an interesting article Andy..the real growth in cigar sales has been China..I've been saying this for ages...
The problem being in my view the same as nearly everything China related..
first came the wealth of 3% of the vast population..cigar purchases stable!
the Chinese adore status symbols, it's part of their culture.
Rise in wealth of middle class China..allowing Cuban cigars to be bought.. phenomenal rise in cc consumption...
Phenomenal rise in China's consumption = phenomenal rise in fakes..at all levels from bad to excellent..but all fakes!
In no time at all these will be everywhere, they will undermine the Cuban cigar market causing problems for everyone!
Sit back & watch..I know I'm cynical..but I know I'm right
PS When Orange was backed by Hutchinson Whampoa back in the mid 80's I said they would end up as the worlds biggest comms supplier...well guess where they're heading....

The biggest comfort I can take is that the cigar market has been going up and down for years. Despite this a sensible, informed aficionado can always source good sticks.
I think the Chinese factor is very interesting from a fakes point of view. I think the prediction in an inevitable rise in fakes is probably likely and I would suggest they will be produced in China.
We have already seen fake vintage Dunhill's and Davidoffs (from the US) flooding the aficionado market in the last 2 years. This has made it very hard to trade in these sticks and if the Chinese start this will get harder still.
Same rules always apply though, know your sources.Originally posted by Simon BolivarLittle medical correction there Steve, you will surely die...but not from smoking these

I honestly don't know why people don't recognise the level of "fakes" coming from China, it's not just "poor" quality goods they manufacture...they make goods for nearly everyone of the major brand labels on our high streets & counterfeits/fakes for just about every market at every level....
Dunhill leather goods!! Want a Dunhill briefcase..go to any bag/leather shop in Shanghai, on display you'll see obvious fakes, dig a little deeper & in no time at all the real thing will come out from somewhere...and it is genuine Dunhill, made in the same factory as dozens of other brands...ask Dunhill if they manufacture in China they will tell you NO! It's not just Dunhill it's everyone....
Marlboro cigarettes are made under licence for PM in China, totally legally...counterfeit Marlboro had been sold in Tesco's & Waitrose for months before anyone realised!
Try to find out where Xicar cigar cutters are made..I bet you'll be surprised!
I'm really sure this is going to cause a real problem in the so-called gray market which as we know is manipulated by our "trusted sources"...

I don't think people care too much puffy. anyone who chases designer goods (myself included) are ultimately being (t some extent) shallow. If I am seeking ultimate quality I will look deeper. I know if my Dupont is a French or Chinese one (it says on the bottom ).
It certainly is a problem in many sectors. We are drifting into the realm of fakes, or exact replicas It has been a big problem in the micro-processor market for a while. Does a tray of processors that comes of the same production line/die/process/qc as a brand-name (Intel for example) perform any different if it doesnt say 'Intel' on the top?
We'll have to keep our eyes peeled puffy, that's for sure.
Just as a side-note some Chinese guys I met in Asia were bitching about the cost of manufacturing going up in China ...and they now manufacturer their stuff in Bangladesh!Originally posted by Simon BolivarLittle medical correction there Steve, you will surely die...but not from smoking these
